Job Summary
The Industrial Refrigeration & Facilities Technician is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all industrial refrigeration, HVAC, cooling, and related facility systems. This position serves as the site's subject matter expert for refrigeration systems and is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, and optimizing refrigeration equipment to ensure uninterrupted production operations, food safety compliance, and product integrity.
In addition to refrigeration responsibilities, the technician will provide electrical, mechanical, and facilities maintenance support throughout the plant, helping improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and minimize reliance on third-party refrigeration contractors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, but are not limited to:
Refrigeration Systems
- Serve as the primary on-site technician responsible for refrigeration system operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Monitor refrigeration system performance including suction pressures, discharge pressures, superheat, subcooling, compressor loading, temperatures, and energy consumption.
- Diagnose and repair refrigeration equipment failures include compressors, condensers, evaporators, cooling towers, receivers, pumps, piping, valves, regulators, and controls.
- Perform refrigerant leak detection, troubleshooting, repair, evacuation, recovery, charging, and documentation in compliance with EPA regulations.
- Conduct pump-down procedures and safely isolate refrigeration equipment for maintenance and repairs.
- Troubleshoot and resolve refrigeration surges, pressure fluctuations, temperature excursions, compressor short-cycling, control failures, and system inefficiencies.
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on compressors, condensers, evaporators, piping systems, valves, controls, motors, and associated refrigeration equipment.
- Maintain and repair evaporators, fan motors, expansion valves, defrost systems, condenser coils, pressure regulators, and refrigeration controls.
- Conduct routine inspections of coolers, freezers, HVAC systems, refrigeration equipment rooms, and associated support systems.
- Coordinate and oversee refrigeration contractors when specialized support is required.
Electrical and Controls Support
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems associated with refrigeration and production equipment.
- Diagnose and repair motors, motor starters, contactors, overloads, relays, disconnects, and electrical distribution equipment.
- Troubleshoot variable frequency drives (VFDs), temperature controllers, pressure transmitters, sensors, and process control devices.
Mechanical and Facilities Support
- Repair pumps, conveyors, gearboxes, valves, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, and related mechanical equipment.
- Perform plumbing, pipefitting, welding, brazing, soldering, and fabrication activities as required.
- Support preventative maintenance programs designed to improve equipment reliability and reduce downtime.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong knowledge of industrial refrigeration systems, HVAC equipment, compressors, condensers, evaporators, controls, and refrigeration piping systems.
- Ability to diagnose refrigeration leaks, pressure issues, electrical failures, and mechanical system malfunctions.
- Proficient with refrigeration gauges, leak detection equipment, electrical testing instruments, and maintenance software.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum five years industrial refrigeration experience in food manufacturing, cold storage, distribution, or industrial processing environments.
- Experience in maintaining Freon refrigeration systems required.
- Experience with industrial electrical troubleshooting is preferred.
- Experience in food manufacturing environments is strongly preferred.
