About AECI 1 Charter School
AECI 1 Charter School opened in 2008 as a high school and for nearly two decades has had a proven track record of consistent student success. Our mission is to provide a supportive and challenging learning environment that prepares students to explore the skills, knowledge, and practical experiences leading to college and a career focused in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries. With our rigorous college and architecture prep program, AECI 1 consistently achieves an over 95% graduation rate.
AECI 1 expanded to a middle school in 2025 to continue fostering a community of academic excellence, innovation, and personal growth starting in the 6th grade.
The Role
We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Spanish 2 teacher to cover a planned leave from August 27, 2026 through January 22, 2027. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic educator who teaches for real communication — building students' proficiency in the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes through culturally rich, thematically organized units. Committed to both academic excellence and social-emotional development, this teacher will use student performance data to inform instruction and ensure all learners thrive.
Because this is a leave replacement, the teacher will step into an established course with existing curriculum, pacing, and assessments already in place. We are looking for someone who can maintain continuity for students, keep the course on pace, and hand off cleanly at the end of the assignment. The outgoing teacher and the world languages team will support onboarding.
Responsibilities
- Deliver an engaging, proficiency-based Spanish 2 curriculum aligned to the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages (Checkpoint A into Checkpoint B).
- Maintain the established scope, sequence, and pacing of the course, coordinating with the department to ensure a smooth transition in and out of the assignment.
- Provide substantial comprehensible input in Spanish and structure daily opportunities for students to speak, listen, read, and write in the target language.
- Integrate the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, drawing on students' own linguistic and cultural assets.
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and abilities, including implementing IEP and ELL accommodations.
- Assess and monitor student progress through a variety of formative and summative assessments, and maintain accurate, current gradebook records.
- Create a classroom environment that promotes curiosity, discussion, risk-taking, and critical thinking.
- Collaborate with fellow educators to connect language learning to our architecture, engineering, and construction theme and to cross-curricular projects.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with students, families, and colleagues.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives and professional development for the duration of the assignment.
- Prepare thorough transition documentation, including grades, student progress notes, and pacing status, in advance of the January 22, 2027 end date.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Spanish, Education, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Advanced or native-level fluency in Spanish, with strong written and spoken proficiency in English.
- Experience teaching secondary-level Spanish, or comparable experience with adolescent learners.
- Strong understanding of best practices in world language instruction, including proficiency-based and communicative approaches.
- Ability to step into an existing course and maintain continuity with minimal ramp-up.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable classroom environment.
- Passion for working with high school students in a dynamic educational setting.
