JOB
The incumbent is responsible for assisting the Principal Engineer in planning, assigning, supervising and actively participating in the activities of the overall sanitary and civil engineering program. This is difficult professional engineering work performed under the general supervision of the Principal Engineer. This class differs from that of other engineering positions by virtue of its expanded scope, level of responsibility and supervisory responsibility. Supervision is exercised over subordinate engineering positions to assist with the more difficult problems and to review their work to ensure the maintenance of high professional engineering standards. Supervision may also be exercised drafting room, record room, field party and inspection personnel.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Acts as an Assistant to the Principal Engineer and in his absence, acts in his/per place;
Performs administrative duties of engineering section;
Supervises and participates in the preparation and analysis of a wide variety of sanitary engineering statistics, data, designs, records and reports;
Suggests and recommends the improvement of sanitary engineering procedures and facilities for the development of long-range projects and programs;
Prepares specifications for the more complex engineering activities;
Supervises and assists subordinate staff members with their more difficult problems and reviews their work.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as it relates to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of a large municipal sewer system;
Good knowledge of sanitary engineering as it relates to sewage treatment, sewage lines and appurtenances to the sewer system;
Ability to design and construct additions and improvements to a large sewage system;
Ability to prepare and analyze hydraulic engineering records and reports;
Ability to express and evaluate engineering concepts and decisions in drawings, designs, and written specifications;
Ability to understand and carry out administrative directions;
