Job Description
The adult volunteer choir of 15-20 singers is the primary music ensemble of the congregation, leading and supporting congregational singing of hymns and liturgy and providing additional music at the appropriate places in the liturgy (psalm, Gospel acclamation, offering, choral stanzas of hymns, etc.). The adult choir currently sings two or three times monthly (10:30service) September through May and at festival services (Rally Day, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Easter, but possibly other special services in coordination with the schedules of other music ensembles).
Responsibilities of the Director:
● Conduct choir at those services for which the choir is scheduled to sing.
● Prepare for rehearsals, selecting music appropriate to the specific service/liturgical date, learning the music in advance of the rehearsal, and providing music to the accompanist in advance.
● Coordinate choral liturgical participation (psalms, acclamations, hymn stanzas, etc.) with organist.
● Conduct rehearsals in a manner that is welcoming and encouraging to volunteer singers while striving for excellence. Rehearsals are currently scheduled weekly on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 P.M. with brief rehearsals approximately 30 minutes before the services at which the choir is singing.
● Maintain music library (or oversee volunteer librarian). Order new music within limits of annual budget.
● Arrange for a substitute when absence is necessary.
● Take advantage of continuing education opportunities through membership in professional organizations, attending relevant workshops and conferences, or by other means. Stay abreast of current trends in Lutheran liturgical worship.
● Cultivate familiarity with denominational resources, including hymnals and supplements.
● Communicate with office staff, submitting information and materials for publication in a timely manner.
● Maintain communication with other music staff, working together to set schedules and conveying information from the service planning team when necessary. The Choir Director is a member of the service planning team and Worship & Music committee. The service planning team (including Pastor, Organist, Choir Directors and Parish Administrator) meets regularly to select hymns and liturgical music and plan services, time and frequency TBD based on availability. Worship & Music committee meets quarterly following worship. Staff members work as a team to lay groundwork for meaningful worship for all participants.
Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent, with experience conducting vocal ensembles.
● Familiarity with Lutheran liturgical practice and hymnody or openness to mentoring.
● Ability to conduct small instrumental ensembles (such as brass or string quartet) when they are employed for special services.
All staff must participate in the Safeguarding God's Children training program or similar boundary program and complete a background check.
