Position Title : Street Construction Worker 1

Starting Hourly Pay Rate: $ 19.10; $20.07 with a CDL License

About This Opportunity:
Performs skilled trades work installing, repairing and maintaining streets, sidewalks, driveways, drainage ways and related facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Street Construction Supervisor and Street Construction Crew Leader.
Essential Functions:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. - Repairs and maintains streets; repairs potholes; sets concrete forms and pours concrete.
- Installs, maintains and repairs drainage ways, catch basins, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, storm drains, etc.
- Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching.
- Grades streets, ditches and driveways.
- Cleans storm drains and catch basins.
- Maintains and repairs equipment.
- Performs tree trimming for the removal of tree limbs in the right of way and in the line of sight.
- Operates equipment such as loader, backhoe, dump truck, rollers, mowers and a variety of landscaping equipment.
- Participates in snow and ice removal.
- Responds to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of City and Department policies and procedures;
- thorough knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned;
- general knowledge of City streets, SDS sheets, and (MUTCD) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Device;
- some knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software;
- general knowledge in preparing correspondence; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions;
- ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions;
- ability to lift heavy articles;
- ability to make arithmetic computations;
- ability to compute asphalt tonnage for repairs;
- ability to compute yards of concrete required for projects;
- ability to compute grade and slope;
- ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Drivers License valid in Tennessee.
Special Requirements:
- Class A commercial driver’s license valid in the State of Tennessee preferred.
- Obtain a valid Class A commercial driver's license in the State of Tennessee within one year of hire.
- Obtain Tanker Endorsement within 2 years of hire.
- Obtain Forklift certifications within two years of hire.
- Complete Flagger, Confined Space, Trench Safety, Boom Truck, Defensive Driving, Pipe Laser and Transit training within two years of hire.
Physical Requirements:
- This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force;

- worker has frequent working near moving mechanical parts,
- exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather),
- working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals,
- exposure to the risk of electrical shock,
- wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and
- exposure to blood borne pathogens and
- may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
