The Shelter Monitor is responsible for helping maintain a safe, secure, respectful, and supportive environment for shelter guests, staff, and visitors during their assigned shift. This position supports daily shelter operations through guest engagement, safety monitoring, documentation, communication, and coordination with site leadership and program staff.
The Shelter Monitor plays an important role in ensuring shelter operations run smoothly while supporting a trauma-informed and service-oriented environment. Daily shift reports and timely communication are essential to maintaining continuity between shifts and ensuring operational needs are addressed promptly.
Key Responsibilities
Communication and Coordination
Review daily logs, journals, and communication reports to remain informed of shelter operations, guest concerns, incidents, and shift updates.
Conduct detailed shift handovers to support continuity of care and effective communication between staff.
Communicate regularly with Site Leads and Supervisors regarding operational updates, incidents, maintenance concerns, and guest-related matters.
Respond to shelter phone calls and operational requests in a timely and professional manner.
Maintain accurate records related to room occupancy, guest movement, housekeeping needs, and maintenance concerns.
Coordinate laundry, housekeeping, and janitorial schedules while communicating expectations with guests and staff.
Support guest check-in and check-out processes and ensure required documentation is completed accurately.
Assist with implementation of shelter procedures, including room assignments, curfew expectations, and daily operational guidelines.
Complete and submit required daily shift reports, incident reports, and operational documentation before the end of each shift.
Maintenance, Food, and Supplies
Monitor shelter facilities and report maintenance concerns, including plumbing, electrical, cleanliness, or safety issues, to Site Leadership promptly.
Coordinate with janitorial staff and other on-site personnel regarding room turnover, cleaning needs, and sanitation concerns.
Maintain inventory of shelter supplies, including hygiene products, linens, cleaning supplies, food, and water.
Notify Site Leadership when supplies require replenishment.
Distribute linens, towels, hygiene items, and other approved supplies to guests as needed.
Assist with meal distribution and food delivery procedures in accordance with shelter protocols.
Security and Safety
Maintain a visible and active presence throughout the shelter to support safety, accountability, and resident engagement.
Conduct regular site rounds and rotate through designated shelter areas, including the lobby, community room, garage, and residential floors.
Monitor shelter activity and address concerns in a calm, professional, and trauma-informed manner.
Support de-escalation efforts and communicate safety concerns or incidents immediately to Site Leadership.
Ensure guests follow shelter rules, safety procedures, and program expectations.
Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established emergency and incident response procedures.
Recordkeeping and Confidentiality
Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed documentation of incidents, guest interactions, operational concerns, and shift activity.
Ensure all reports and logs are completed before the end of each shift.
Maintain confidentiality regarding guest information, shelter operations, and sensitive program matters in accordance with agency policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience working in shelters, residential programs, security, social services, or customer service environments preferred.
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a trauma-informed environment.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.
Basic computer and documentation skills required.
Ability to work evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Hourly Rate: $25.00 – $35.00 per hour
