JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Accounting will serve as the primary financial leader for our foster care agency, ensuring the fiscal integrity and operational efficiency of the organization. This role oversees all daily accounting functions, including AP, AR, billing, and payroll, while managing a dedicated internal team of two and coordinating with third-party service providers. The Director will serve as a key liaison with our external CPA and will play a critical role in strategic planning through budgeting and advanced financial analysis.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- General Ledger Ownership: Own and maintain the integrity of the General Ledger, including the chart of accounts structure, journal entry review and posting, and period-end close process. Drive the month-end and year-end close timelines and review all reconciliations prepared by staff.
- Financial Operations: Direct and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department, ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately and in compliance with GAAP.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and evaluate a staff of two accounting professionals. Manage the relationship and output of our third-party Medicaid billing.
- Reporting & Analysis: Prepare comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements. Perform in-depth financial analysis to identify trends and provide actionable insights to leadership.
- Cash Management: Develop and implement bi-weekly cash flow forecasts to ensure adequate liquidity for operational requirements and strategic investments.
- Budgeting: Lead the annual budget development process in collaboration with the executive team.
- Produce monthly budget-to-actual reports and present variances to the executive team.
- Ensures accounting has appropriate internal controls.
- Specialized Billing: Manage complex billing cycles associated with foster care services, ensuring timely reimbursement from local agencies.
- Payroll & Benefits: Oversee the processing of payroll and the administration of the 401(k) plan, ensuring compliance with ERISA and other regulatory standards.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or Master’s degree preferred)
- Industry Experience: Mandatory experience in Foster Care, Residential Care, or similar non-profit/social service environments interfacing with state agencies.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks Online (QBO) and Microsoft Excel. Familiarity with Melio and Electronic Health Records (Extended Reach) is a plus.
- Deep understanding of state-funded social service reimbursement models.
- Experience with federal (Title IV-E) and state billing systems is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate complex data into strategic recommendations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for interfacing with staff, vendors, and external auditors.

- Leadership: Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
Location: Must be based in or near Richmond, VA, for a hybrid remote schedule (2-3 days in office)
Pay: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
