The Sign Language Interpreter will provide communication access for students who are deaf or hard of hearing and will facilitate communication between students, teachers, classmates, administrators, therapists, and other school personnel.
The interpreter will work within the educational environment to support students' access to instruction, classroom activities, school events, and other educational services while maintaining professional interpreting standards, confidentiality, and student-centered practices.
Pay starting from $30.00/hr up to $35.00/hr

- Provide accurate and effective American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation in K–12 educational settings.
- Facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and teachers, staff, peers, administrators, and other members of the educational team.
- Interpret classroom instruction, classroom discussions, activities, assemblies, meetings, field trips, and other school-related activities.
- Follow student IEP requirements and applicable educational interpreting service plans.
- Adapt interpreting strategies and communication approaches according to the student's age, language level, educational needs, and communication preferences.
- Accurately convey the meaning, intent, tone, and content of communication without adding, omitting, or changing information.
- Maintain student confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Collaborate with teachers, special education personnel, related-service providers, administrators, and families.
- Support an inclusive, respectful, and accessible learning environment.
- Follow ESS Clinical and Denver Public Schools policies, procedures, and professional standards.
- Participate in required meetings, training, professional development, and district activities.
- Maintain appropriate documentation related to interpreting services as required.
- Promote student independence and communication access while maintaining the appropriate role of the educational interpreter.
Candidates must hold or be eligible to obtain the Colorado Department of Education Educational Interpreter Authorization.
Applicants seeking the Colorado Educational Interpreter Authorization generally must provide:
- An associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in educational interpreting or a related field, such as American Sign Language.
- Certificate demonstrating a passing score on the EIPA written examination.
- Successful completion of the required performance assessment.
- For ASL/sign-language interpreters, an EIPA performance score of 3.5 or higher.
- Required documentation of education, assessment results, and prior work experience.
- Required Colorado background check and fingerprint submission through the Colorado Department of Education process.
The Colorado Educational Interpreter Authorization is valid for five years.
The following are preferred but should not replace the Colorado authorization requirements unless accepted under applicable Colorado rules:
- RID certification
- National interpreter certification
- Bachelor's degree in ASL-English Interpretation, Educational Interpreting, Deaf Education, or a related field
- Previous K–12 educational interpreting experience
- Previous experience working as an educational interpreter in a K–12 school setting.
- Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Experience supporting students with IEPs.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and educational interpreting standards.
- Experience working collaboratively with special education teams.
- Experience interpreting for students with additional disabilities or complex communication needs.
- Bachelor's degree in ASL-English Interpretation, Educational Interpreting, Deaf Education, or a related field.
- Current professional interpreter certification.
