Position Summary
Lansing Christian School seeks a dedicated Christian educator to serve as our K–12 Music Teacher within a Christ-centered, liberal arts framework. In affirmation and alignment with the LCS mission, the teacher partners with Christian families, colleagues, and school leadership to educate students to the full extent of their God-given abilities. The music program engages students in developing skills, interests, and appreciation for the fine arts through the cultivation of musical skills, music appreciation, confidence, discipline, collaboration, and joyful expression for the glory of God.
The K–12 Music Teacher provides leadership and instruction across elementary, middle school, and high school music programs, including general music appreciation, choir, and band. The teacher fosters an environment where students learn to recognize beauty, creativity, order, and truth through music while developing foundational and advanced musicianship skills. This role requires a deep commitment to excellence, spiritual formation, and the development of the whole student intellectually, spiritually, socially, and physically.
Qualifications
- A clear, strong, personal commitment to Jesus Christ and agreement with the school’s Doctrinal Statement and all policies.
- Commitment to the purpose of a Christ-centered liberal arts education model and the LCS mission and philosophy.
- Bachelor’s degree in music education or a related field (master’s degree preferred).
- Experience teaching K-12 music preferred.
- Experience directing choir and/or band ensembles preferred.
- Teaching certification preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, administration, students, and families.
- A heart for mentoring, discipling, and shepherding students.
Responsibilities
- Teach general music appreciation classes for elementary and middle school students.
- Direct and develop choir and band programs across grades 4–12.
- Cultivate musical literacy, performance skills, and music appreciation appropriate to each grade level.
- Prepare students for concerts, festivals, chapel participation, and other performances.
- Encourage student growth in creativity, confidence, collaboration, discipline, and musical expression.
- In alignment with LCS policies, teach from a biblical worldview, guiding students to see Christ as the foundation of all truth, wisdom, and knowledge.
- Cultivate a classroom culture that reflects the pursuit of truth, beauty, and virtue through thoughtful inquiry, meaningful discussion, and disciplined study.
- Communicate consistently and effectively with parents, recognizing and honoring their primary role and responsibility as shepherds of their child’s education.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administration regarding student progress and program needs.
- Model Christlike character in word and deed, demonstrating humility, grace, self-discipline, and a love for learning.
- Participate actively in faculty collaboration, professional development, and the broader life of the school, contributing to a unified and mission-driven school community.
- Engage in mentorship, discipleship, and extracurricular opportunities that support well-rounded student growth.
LCS Music Program Summary
Elementary School (K–5)
Music is a required class that meets two times per week. Elementary music classes are designed to progressively build musical understanding and technical skills each year:
- Kindergarten – Rhythm reading
- 1 st Grade – Solfege singing
- 2 nd Grade – Treble clef letter names and glockenspiel performance
- 3 rd Grade – Chord understanding and rhythm application on ukulele
- 4 th Grade – Choir and band exploration through Christmas concert participation and recorder instruction
- 5 th Grade – Beginning performance-based groups (choir or band)
Middle School (6–8)
Students continue developing their musicianship through performance-based choir or band participation. Instruction emphasizes technical growth, ensemble performance, music literacy, and artistic excellence. Beginning in 8th grade, students may also participate in General Music Appreciation class.
High School (9–12)
High school choirs and bands provide advanced-level musicianship and expanded performance opportunities, including festivals, concerts, and the State Honors Choir. Additional music electives may include piano, guitar, songwriting, and student composition, helping students further develop individual musicianship and creativity.
