The Occupational Therapist is responsible for evaluating, planning, and implementing individualized treatment programs to help residents regain or maintain their ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), improve fine motor skills, cognitive function, and safety. The OT works as part of an interdisciplinary team to promote residents’ independence, quality of life, and functional recovery.
- Perform occupational therapy evaluations and establish treatment plans tailored to resident needs.
- Address deficits in self-care, ADLs, upper body strength, cognitive function, coordination, and safety awareness.
- Implement direct therapy sessions and adjust treatment plans based on resident progress.
- Provide education and training to residents, families, and facility staff on adaptive equipment, compensatory strategies, and home programs.
- Recommend and train in the use of assistive devices, splints, or environmental modifications.
- Supervise and delegate responsibilities to Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) in compliance with state practice acts.
- Accurately document evaluations, daily treatments, and progress notes in the medical record.
- Participate in care planning and interdisciplinary meetings.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations including Medicare/Medicaid guidelines.
