NATURE OF WORK: This is semi-skilled work in the operation of heavy trucks and automotive equipment. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of trucks and other equipment which may require special operating techniques, such as those for the manipulation of subsidiary controls while the vehicle is moving. It may include some light maintenance and servicing of the assigned equipment as well as manual laboring duties. Assignments may be given in detail for each job or work may follow an established routine. Supervision may be exercised over one or more unskilled workers. Work is reviewed both in process and upon completion for quality, quantity, and safety of operations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Drives and loads a refuse collection truck along a fixed collection route; acts as lead worker of collection crew. Operates trucks on street, and construction work, hauling laborers, material and equipment. Operates loaders, spreaders, tractors, and other equipment. Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor work on various construction, maintenance, and refuse collection activities and other departmental operations. Washes, services, and makes minor repairs to trucks and other assigned equipment. Knowledge of the principles or operation and servicing of trucks and related automotive equipment. Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation. Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in the operation of trucks and other automotive equipment. Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions. Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/TRAINING: Experience as a truck driver or operator of construction and maintenance equipment, and possession of a standard high school diploma or GED. Combination of relevant education, experience, and training may be substituted as appropriate. Must possess a valid State of Ohio Driver’s License with Commercial Driver’s endorsement (CDL Class B), and be insurable under the City of Chillicothe’s fleet insurance coverage.
