Position Overview
We are looking for a responsible, enthusiastic, and team-oriented Leadership Activity Specialist to lead engaging, The Leadership Activity Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing, and facilitating engaging leadership activities while incorporating social-emotional learning (SEL) and life skill components for students in grades K–8 during the after-school program. Working collaboratively with the Group Leader, the Leadership Activity Specialist will supervise participants, ensure their safety and well-being, and create a positive learning environment that promotes leadership, character development, emotional intelligence, civic responsibility, and academic success.
This position will be a part of our Youth and Family Services offered at Sunnyside Community Services, which includes a pre-kindergarten program, after-school programs for elementary and middle school students, high school job readiness, career readiness, and enrichment programming and Adult and Immigrant Services
Position Responsibilities [FS1]
· Supervise a group of Participants along with the Group Leader and provide for the safety and well-being of participants.
· Prepare material and examples in advance for student understanding during activities.
· Design and deliver leadership-focused educational programming that develops communication, collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking, conflict resolution, and responsible decision-making.
· Integrate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies into daily programming, including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
· Foster student resilience, empathy, emotional regulation, growth mindset, and positive peer relationships through engaging activities and discussions.
· Develop and lead activities that foster student engagement in school and the community while building critical leadership competencies.
· Implement leadership development experiences that may include service-learning projects, civic engagement and community service initiatives, team-building activities, public speaking and effective communication workshops, Peer mentoring and leadership opportunities, conflict resolution and restorative practices, character education, goal-setting and personal development, exploration of post-secondary education opportunities, career awareness and career pathway activities.
· Work collaboratively with the Program Director and Content Specialist on program initiatives and requirements
· Complete additional tasks as necessary
Requirements:
· Must be 18 years old or older.
· Must be available M-F during program hours (3:00 pm- 6:00 pm)
· Ability to work during school breaks to conduct camp activities.
· Bachelor's Degree in related field or have 18 or more education, Leadership Studies, Organizational Leadership, Educational Leadership, Youth Development, Human Development and Family Studies, Education, Psychology, Sociology or Social Work
· Experience with teaching Leadership and a minimum of two years’ experience in an afterschool environment.
· Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
· This position begins in September after clearances are completed. Afterschool staff are expected to be committed to the position until the end of the school year in June.
· All candidates will go through the New York City Public Schools clearance process and complete a variety of mandated training prior to beginning work with youth.
