Nanny / Family Assistant – 30 Hours/Week

About the Family
A warm South Orange family is seeking a long-term Nanny / Family Assistant to care for their two children, a 1-year-old and 4-year-old.
The family is looking for someone who is proactive, loving, energetic, organized, and genuinely enjoys creating a calm and engaging environment for children.
Care will be split between the children throughout the day. The nanny will spend time with the 1-year-old during the early afternoon, then transition to caring for the 4-year-old following preschool pickup.
One parent is a stay-at-home parent, while Dad works from home approximately 2–3 days per week.
Schedule
30 hours per week
- Monday–Friday, 3:00 PM–6:00 PM is required for preschool pickup and afternoon care
- Friday availability beginning at 11:30 AM is required
- The remaining hours will be scheduled consistently with the selected candidate based on mutual availability and the family's needs
- The family is open to different schedule structures, including shorter days across the week or a combination of longer and shorter days
- Once established, the schedule will remain consistent week to week
- Weekend availability is a plus
- Additional availability on school holidays and days off is highly preferred
Responsibilities
- Provide attentive, hands-on care for a 1-year-old and 4-year-old
- Engage the 1-year-old in age-appropriate play and enrichment
- Prepare food/snacks and assist with feeding
- Put the 1-year-old down for naps
- Pick up the 4-year-old from preschool
- Safely transport the 4-year-old to activities and playdates
- Coordinate playdates for the 4-year-old
- Lead engaging indoor and outdoor activities
- Encourage age-appropriate independence, learning, and exploration
- Follow the family's gentle-parenting approach, using calm redirection, clear boundaries, and explanations rather than harsh discipline
Family Assistant / Household Support
During appropriate periods when children are sleeping, with a parent, or otherwise occupied:
- Children's and household laundry, including washing, folding, and putting away
- Load and unload dishwasher
- Keep kitchen cabinets and children's areas organized
- Toy cleanup and organization
- Vacuuming and light cleaning
- Wiping down kitchen counters and children's play areas
- Take out garbage and recycling
- Batch cooking and fruit/vegetable preparation
- Maintain household inventory
- Assist with organizational projects such as closet turnover and toy rotation
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and functional home environment
About the Household
- The family maintains a screen-free household; there is no television in the home
- The ideal nanny will remain off their phone/devices while working, except when needed for work-related communication
- The household has one cat
- The family values a proactive caregiver who plans ahead rather than waiting to be directed
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience caring for infants and toddlers
- Experience caring for multiple children
- A valid driver's license
- A clean driving record
- A reliable personal vehicle
- Current CPR certification
- Experience managing or willingness to learn how to appropriately manage a child's food allergy, including carrying an EpiPen
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- A warm, patient, and nurturing personality
- Ability to actively engage with children without relying on screens
- Comfort supporting a gentle-parenting philosophy
- Reliable availability for the required Monday–Friday 3:00–6:00 PM schedule
The family prefers candidates who are vaccinated for COVID-19, influenza, and Tdap.
