Position Overview:The Illinois Certified Gym Teacher will be responsible for providing a comprehensive physical education curriculum for students in grades 1-8, ensuring alignment with Common Core Standards for Physical Education. This teacher will focus on fostering physical fitness, motor skills development, and promoting lifelong healthy habits while emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, and individual growth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Development & Instruction:
- Develop and implement a physical education curriculum that aligns with the Illinois State Standards for Physical Education and Common Core Standards.
- Ensure all lessons are age-appropriate and provide students opportunities to develop physical, social, and emotional skills.
- Include various physical activities that promote strength, coordination, flexibility, endurance, and teamwork.
- Integrate lessons on health, nutrition, and wellness, reinforcing Common Core standards related to health literacy.
- Physical Skills Development:
- Plan activities that focus on developing students' gross and fine motor skills.
- Provide students with the opportunity to learn and practice various sports, games, and activities that improve their physical fitness.
- Ensure students' progress in physical education through structured assessments and clear learning objectives.
- Assessment & Feedback:
- Regularly assess students' physical progress, including motor skill development, teamwork, and fitness levels.
- Use formative assessments to provide feedback and modify instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Communicate students' progress to parents and caregivers, highlighting fitness and personal development growth.
- Classroom Management & Environment:
- Create a positive, supportive, inclusive physical education environment where all students feel valued and encouraged.
- Promote respect, cooperation, and good sportsmanship in every activity, cultivating a sense of Community.
- Foster a culture of respect and responsibility, where students understand the importance of effort and perseverance.
- Integration of Common Core Standards:
- Apply Common Core standards related to critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration in physical education.
- Use cooperative activities and problem-solving games to encourage teamwork, self-regulation, and social-emotional learning.
- Incorporate activities that engage students in mathematics (e.g., measurement of performance, tracking progress) and language arts (e.g., instructions, communication during group activities).
- Collaboration with School Staff:
- Work with other faculty to integrate physical education concepts with appropriate classroom learning.
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in education and physical fitness.
- Health and Safety:
- Ensure all students are engaged in safe physical activities and follow proper warm-up, cool-down, and injury prevention protocols.
- Monitor any student health concerns and provide appropriate accommodations as necessary to ensure each child's safety and participation.
- Promotion of Healthy Habits:
- Encourage students to adopt a healthy lifestyle with regular physical activity and nutritious food choices.
- Promote lifelong fitness by teaching students the value of staying active beyond the classroom.
- Community Involvement & School Events:
- Participate in school-wide events, such as Field Day or Health Fairs, to promote fitness and school spirit.
- Encourage family involvement in physical education-related events to create a supportive Community around fitness and wellness.
Qualifications:
- Illinois State Certification as a Physical Education Teacher.
- Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Health Education, or a related field.
- Knowledge and understanding of Common Core Standards as they relate to physical education and student wellness.
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with special needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with students, parents, and faculty.
- CPR and First Aid Certification preferred.
- Experience with integrating technology to enhance learning (e.g., using fitness tracking tools, digital assessments) is a plus.
Work Environment:
- This position will be based in a school setting, and physical education classes will be held both indoors and outdoors, depending on weather and available facilities.
- The teacher will work closely with other educators to ensure the holistic development of students, integrating the physical, mental, and social aspects of education.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
