Nurse Circulator Job Description
Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Nurse Surgery Circulator to join our team at our Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). The Circulating Nurse plays a vital role in the surgical team, ensuring the safe and efficient care of patients undergoing outpatient surgical procedures. This position requires clinical expertise, sound judgment, and a commitment to delivering high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the patient’s advocate throughout the perioperative experience.
- Confirm patient identity, surgical procedure, and site per established safety protocols (e.g., time-out).
- Monitor the sterile field and maintain aseptic technique.
- Prepare the operating room with necessary equipment, supplies, and instruments.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and scrub techs to ensure timely and efficient surgical procedures.
- Document all intraoperative events, medications, specimens, and equipment used.
- Facilitate communication between the OR team and other departments (e.g., PACU, pathology).
- Provide updates to patients’ families as appropriate.
- Maintain effective communication with all members of the surgical team.
- Adhere to all ASC policies, procedures, and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, HIPAA, AAAHC).
- Participate in ongoing quality improvement initiatives and infection control practices.
- Assist in room turnover and prepare the OR for subsequent cases.
- Ensure accurate counts of instruments, sponges, and sharps.
- Participate in debriefings and postoperative documentation.
Skills
- Minimum 1 year of OR experience required, preferably in an ASC or outpatient surgical setting.
- Experience with multiple surgical specialties (e.g., orthopedics, ophthalmology, podiatry, plastics) is a plus.
- Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
