Operations & Patient Flow
- Daily Workflow: Directing unit traffic to prevent bottlenecks and long wait times.
- Bed Management: Coordinating with the ER and ICU to ensure rapid patient placement.
- Resource Allocation: Assigning staff based on "patient acuity" (the severity of illness).
- Discharge Planning: Meeting with social workers to ensure safe, timely patient exits- with special focus on Length of Stay and documentation improvement to improve the Case Mix Index
Human Resources & Team Leadership
- Staff Scheduling: Managing 24/7 rotations, including call-outs and holiday coverage.
- Conflict Resolution: Mediating disputes between medical staff or between staff and families.
- Skill Development: Identifying training gaps and organizing "in-service" education sessions.
- Performance Tracking: Setting annual goals and conducting formal reviews for nurses and techs.
Quality, Safety, & Compliance
- Audit Readiness: Ensuring the unit is always prepared for surprise Joint Commission inspections
- Incident Investigation: Reviewing "near misses" or patient falls to create prevention plans.
- Infection Control: Monitoring strict adherence to hand-hygiene and sterile procedure protocols.
- Patient Experience: Reviewing HCAHPS scores and addressing patient complaints directly.
Financial & Strategic Management
- Budget Variance: Explaining why the department went over or under budget each month.
- Supply Chain: Approving high-cost medical equipment orders and monitoring waste.
- Strategic Growth: Helping the Department Chair plan for new service lines or unit expansions.
- Labor Costs: Monitoring "overtime" usage and balancing the use of expensive travel nurses.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration , Masters preferred
- Experience: Typically 3–5 years of clinical experience, often in a hospital or leadership role.
- Certifications: Valuable credentials include Certified Clinical Manager (CCM) or Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM)- preferred
- Technical Proficiency: Expert knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and healthcare management software.
