Overview
The Regional Dry Van & Container Freight Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating and managing the daily movement of dry van trailers and container freight throughout an assigned region. This role ensures on-time pickups and deliveries, maximizes driver and equipment utilization, and maintains strong communication with drivers, customers, warehouses, rail terminals, and internal operations teams. The dispatcher serves as a key point of contact for freight coordination and is responsible for resolving service issues while maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Dispatch and coordinate regional dry van and container freight movements.
- Assign loads to drivers based on availability, location, hours of service, and customer requirements.
- Monitor and track shipments from pickup through final delivery.
- Schedule pickups and deliveries with customers, warehouses, rail terminals, and distribution centers.
- Communicate load information, route instructions, and service updates to drivers.
- Ensure timely pickup and delivery performance while meeting customer expectations.
- Manage container availability, appointments, detention, and demurrage when applicable.
- Monitor driver Hours of Service (HOS) and support DOT compliance requirements.
- Resolve operational issues including delays, equipment breakdowns, and customer service concerns.
- Maintain accurate records in Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and dispatch software.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with drivers and customers.
- Coordinate with operations, safety, and maintenance teams to ensure efficient fleet utilization.
- Provide proactive communication regarding shipment status and service disruptions.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of dispatching experience in trucking, logistics, or transportation.
- Experience with dry van and container freight operations.
- Working knowledge of DOT regulations and Hours of Service requirements.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and transportation management software.
Preferred
- Experience with regional trucking operations.
- Knowledge of rail terminal and container logistics.
- Experience using GPS tracking, ELD systems, and load management platforms.
