Candidates may be hired for either:-
Deputy Sheriff I: Entry-level with no/minimal prior law enforcement experience and training. $32.14 per hour. Primary Duties and Responsibilities of the position are outlined in this job posting.

Deputy Sheriff II: Candidates who hold a current Nevada POST Category I Certificate (or a reciprocal certificate from another state). A certificate must be attached to this application for consideration. The job description and salary range for Deputy Sheriff II can be found here. Deputy Sheriff II minimum salary is $35.95; however, the salary is commensurate with the candidate's experience.

Testing Information:
Completed applications will be screened for minimum qualifications. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to schedule their exam. The exam consists of a physical agility assessment., written general aptitude test, and an oral board interview process. The testing process is scheduled as an all-day event. Candidates passing the physical agility test will continue on to the written exam and oral board interview. Applicants must successfully complete each of the three phases to be eligible for employment.
Physical agility requirements:The physical agility test will be held at the Douglas County High School football field.
The Peace Officer Standard Training Committee of Nevada POST has established the physical fitness requirements for graduation from the POST Academy.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has adopted similar physical fitness standards and all applicants seeking employment with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department must successfully complete the following physical fitness standards.
We have outlined the physical fitness requirements so that applicants can prepare in advance. These standards are the same for all applicants, regardless of age or gender.

The written exam and oral board process will be held at the Law Enforcement Center 1038 Buckeye Rd. Minden, NV 89423.
An online Candidate Preparation Manual can be purchased for $7.50 and a Practice Test can be purchased for $17.50. The Preparation Manual includes detailed recommendations on important concepts, such as the most effective test-taking strategies and methods, specific information about CPS HR test forms, and what to expect on the day of the test administration. Also included is several practice questions covering each section of the test, along with helpful tools, such as a sample answer sheet and template test instructions for candidates to prepare before the day of the test.

The written test will be waived for any applicant with a current Nevada
Category I POST Certificate. The written test may also be waived for applicants with a
valid and current Category I POST Certificate from any state with recognized reciprocity. Please attach your POST Certificate to your application. *****

You will be contacted and scheduled for the physical agility after the application review process is complete. After passing the physical exam you will be notified of the oral interview.
All applicants will be subject to an extensive, in-depth background investigation to determine the applicant's suitability for Peace Officer status. Once an applicant has successfully completed each phase of the testing and a conditional offer of employment has been extended, the applicant will be required to complete and pass a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, a medical examination by a licensed physician of the County's choice. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of these tests.

Primary Objectives
Performs intermediate work performing a variety of public safety and law enforcement services in patrol, detention, court services, or civil process assignments; performs related tasks as apparent or assigned.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Attends, participates in, and successfully completes required training programs, certifications, continuing education, and qualifications in accordance with State standards, legal requirements, department policy, and assigned duties to maintain competency and readiness in law enforcement operations.

Provides assistance during medical emergencies, accidents, crime scenes, and other critical incidents by administering appropriate first aid within the scope of training, requesting emergency medical services as needed, maintaining scene safety, and assisting injured, ill, or distressed individuals until relieved by qualified medical personnel.

Acts as coroner as defined under NRS 259.020.

Crime scene preservation and collection of evidence, which includes evidence identification and proper handling procedures.

Uses a county vehicle to perform various tasks related to job duties.

Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.

Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
ADDITIONAL PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Detention
-
Accountability for Inmates – Conducts daily headcounts, periodic cell and pod checks; moves inmates to and from locations for court appearances, medical care, visits, etc.

Intake and Release of Inmates – Escorts inmates into the jail by conducting searches, booking questionnaires, fingerprints, photography, access to money and phone.
-
Ensures Safety of Inmates and Staff – Conducts facility and person searches for weapons/drugs/contraband; conduct surveillance, investigations, and reports of crimes committed within the detention facility; monitor activity of inmates; handle inmates with mental health issues and provide intervention to ensure safety.

Handle Health and Welfare Issues – Carries out processes to ensure that inmates are provided with adequate food, clothing, medicine, and clean living arrangements; Conduct inspections of living conditions to ensure compliance with departmental policy and federal law.

Report Writing – Composes clear and accurate criminal accident and information reports and other necessary reports and forms.

Customer Service - Receives and screens visitors and telephone calls and directs the caller to the proper person or personally handles the call; provides information which requires the use of judgment and interpretation of policies, rules and procedures.

Court Appearances – Transports inmates to and from court; provides security for court staff and inmates during proceedings; updates legal paperwork to ensure timely compliance with court orders; responds to emergencies in the court house.

Medical Treatment – Provides first aid for inmates as required; triage inmates for physician visits and needs for emergency medical treatment and transport; sets up medications and distribute to inmates daily as required; complete documentation for medical issues; provide security for medical staff.

Extraditions – Transports inmates to other agency jails, courts, and other facilities; send notices to other agencies of arrests, process warrants, and set-up extraditions with outside companies who transport inmates.
Civil Process

Locates and serves subpoenas, summonses, warrants, orders to show cause, restraining orders and writs of restitution, possession and execution to individuals, partnerships and corporations.

Executes court orders to attach monies, bank accounts, securities, real and personal property.
Court Services

Organizes probable cause forms, make copies and deliver to District Attorney and Courts as appropriate.

Retrieves copies of criminal complaints, prepare logs for court appearances, prepare copies for courts.

Prepares court lists and confirms with court clerk’s office.

Provides court security as required.
