Job Summary
The Wellness Lead is the strategic and educational anchor of our storefront, responsible for the total operational success and management of the wellness department. This leadership role oversees purchasing, inventory control, and receiving while ensuring our wellness-conscious community receives expert-level guidance. A successful candidate will champion our healthy, family-focused brand by managing vendor relations, maximizing profitability, and modeling exceptional customer consultation and checkout standards.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Department Management & Procurement: Direct the daily operations of the wellness department; analyze sales data to handle all ordering, purchasing, and inventory control for supplements, body care, and specialty wellness goods.
- Receiving & Vendor Relations: Oversee the receiving of all wellness orders, verify invoice accuracy, manage credits for damaged products, and build strong relationships with distributors and brokers.
- Wellness & Consultation Services: Proactively engage with customers on the sales floor, assess their health and dietary goals, answer product questions, and provide information aligned with store standards (e.g., organic, non-GMO, local, fair-trade, DSHEA).
- Wellness Merchandising & Floor Leadership: Manage the overall visual appeal and inventory placement within the wellness department; lead by example on the floor to ensure proper customer assistance, maintain deep ingredient compliance, and guarantee optimal shelf presentation.
- Product Knowledge & Dietary Trends: Attend monthly educational seminars hosted by brand partners, distributors, or holistic experts to stay updated on industry trends, wellness ingredients, and dietary lifestyle developments. Must also complete 2 additional self-initiated wellness trainings from company approved sources.
- Monthly Product Awareness & Training: Prepare and lead monthly educational huddles for department staff focused on product awareness of new, seasonal, or lesser-known supplement and body care products so the team can provide accurate, high-level customer recommendations.
- Product Freshness & Rotation: Monitor product expiration dates closely, practicing the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method to ensure only the freshest healthy options are available.
- Transaction Processing & Cash Management: Scan items efficiently, weigh bulk goods, process all payment types, and count change back to customers; accurately count and balance the cash drawer when supporting the front end.
- Checkout Accuracy & PLU Identification: Consistently scan each item individually to maintain an accurate inventory count, and memorize PLU codes for organic produce, heirloom varieties, and specialty items.
- Bagging & Sustainability: Pack groceries carefully using reusable, paper, or compostable bags, respecting customer preferences for zero-waste packaging.
- Lane & Store Maintenance: Keep the checkout area, shopping aisles, display cases, restrooms, and back rooms clean, sanitized, and organized using store-approved cleaning products.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience & Education: 2 years supplement industry experience required; prior experience in retail purchasing, inventory management, or order placement is a plus; a degree or formal certification in nutrition, herbalism, or holistic health is highly preferred.
- Passion for Wellness & Knowledge: An extensive, deep-rooted knowledge of health, supplements, vitamins, and dietary lifestyles (e.g., vegan, gluten-free, keto) is required, along with a commitment to continuous industry research.
- Operational & Analytical Skills: Strong proficiency in navigating point-of-sale (POS) data, calculating profit margins, and managing stock levels to minimize shrink and out-of-stocks.
- Organizational Skills: Exceptional attention to detail to verify invoices, ensure accurate shelf-pricing labels, and implement beautiful, strategic merchandise displays.
- Communication & Leadership Skills: Confident communication style to negotiate with vendors, alongside empathetic listening skills to guide customers through allergen-sensitive or specialized wellness inquiries.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk comfortably around the store floor for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours).
- Ability to repeatedly lift, bend, push, pull, reach, and carry items weighing up to 25–30 lbs (such as heavy bulk sacks, beverage crates, or stocking boxes).
- Constant manual dexterity for unboxing products, processing orders on computers/handhelds, and handling delicate merchandise.
