Position Description
Position Title: Maintenance Worker-Public Works/Utilities
Department: Utilities
Grade: FLSA Classification: Nonexempt Full Time
Effective Date: September 2025
POSITION SUMMARY: Performs skilled and semi-skilled duties associated with the preventive maintenance and repair of the City’s facilities, water and sewer systems; performs street, streetlight and street signage maintenance and repair, performs maintenance and repairs to irrigation systems, maintains common and park areas of City as well as City buildings. Provides janitorial services such as emptying office trash/recycling, and light mopping/sweeping. Provides support and carries out setup duties for citywide events.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Water System:
Operates and maintains City water system, performing regular preventive maintenance and checking of equipment, structures and onsite generator.
Installs new water meters, repairs and replaces meters that are not properly functioning.
Read water meters and reread meters as requested by residents.
Responds to resident water service problems and complaints.
Repairs breaks and leaks in waters system as required.
Maintain and test fire hydrants on a scheduled basis.
Locate, mark and exercise all distribution valves.
Sewer/Collection System:
Check, maintain and upgrade lift station as necessary.
Maintain emergency pumps and equipment.
Check, maintain and repair collections system, periodically inspecting manholes and sewer mains.
Using mini camera, inspect sewer laterals for problems and to assess need for potential repair needs.
Pull and perform maintenance on lift station pumps, repairing and cleaning as needed; replacing float balls, cleaning of seal filters, hosing down of wet wells, cleaning of float balls, adding degreasing agent for grease and odor control.
Basic understanding of electrical control systems and operations.
Regularly test all lift station generators.
Inspect and maintain storm draining structures and piping, cleaning and repairing as needed.
Streets:
Maintain and repair streets replacing pavement reflectors as needed.
Repair and replace street signposts and street signs.
Maintain, repair and replace City street and ground lights as needed.
Understanding of electrical wiring of street and ground lighting and ballasts.
Ensure that City streets are kept clean of trash and dead animals.
Other Duties:
Provide assistance, as required, with citywide functions.
Perform weekly maintenance checks on the interior and exterior of City buildings to identify repair/maintenance needs; make repairs as needed.
Maintain City common areas and parks, including, but not limited to weed control and fertilization.
Performs maintenance and repairs to irrigation systems.
Provides janitorial services such as emptying office trash/recycling, and light mopping/sweeping.
Check City perimeter fences for security maintain and repair as needed
Provide assistance to other City departments and residents as needed.
Carry out assigned duties in the event a hurricane or other emergency situations.
Provide support on special projects as required and as directed by the Utilities Director and perform such other duties as assigned by Utilities Director and/or City Manager.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Thorough knowledge of one trade or working knowledge of a variety of trades; ability to interpret work instructions and other technical guides; reads blueprints, practical knowledge of tools, machinery and equipment; some work planning and layout; basic electrical wiring knowledge: practical shop mathematics. Work consists of a complex and varied standardized tasks, process, or operations.
RESPONSIBILITY: Works with considerable independence from supervisory controls. Instructions are general. Technical manuals and work precedents may be modified to be practically applied. Has authority to deviate from instructions with prior approval. Makes decisions and judgments affecting quality and adequacy of work. Responsible for a variety of different operations to complete assignments; high degree of accuracy required to protect tools and materials and prevent injury to others.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Effort involves heavy lifting, pushing or pulling, and excessive crouching, stooping, or lying in a prone position and/or involves intense strain on sight or hearing. Performs usually in a non-sitting position. High manual dexterity may be required. Effort is prolonged and frequent. Strain may be extended in duration.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Daily involvement with work that involves chance of major injury or loss of life. Moderate exposure to dust, grease, temperature, noise, inadequate lighting, inclement weather, etc. May work where safety or health may be a factor.
EXPERIENCE: 2-5 years of comparable experience with emphasis on related municipal or community infrastructure maintenance. A combination of education, professional certification, and experience will be considered.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: High school or equivalent.
STARTING PAY RANGE:
Maintenance Worker-Public Works/Utilities - Level 1 $19.50/Hr.
Maintenance Worker-Public Works/Utilities - Level 2
(FWPCOA C Certification in Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection) $21.00/Hr.
Maintenance Worker-Public Works/Utilities - Level 3
(FWPCOA B Certification in Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection) $22.00/Hr
