Outpatient Substance Use Disorder (SUD) & Co-Occurring Disorders Program
Position Summary
The Licensed Mental Health Counselor provides comprehensive behavioral health services to adults with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions in an outpatient treatment setting. The counselor is responsible for conducting biopsychosocial assessments, developing individualized treatment plans, facilitating individual and group therapy, maintaining clinical documentation, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary treatment team to promote recovery and improve overall functioning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial and substance use assessments.
- Diagnose mental health and substance use disorders in accordance with DSM-5-TR criteria.
- Develop, implement, and regularly update individualized treatment plans.
- Provide evidence-based individual, group, and family counseling services.
- Facilitate psychoeducational and relapse prevention groups.
- Utilize evidence-based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, trauma-informed care, and person-centered approaches.
- Monitor client progress toward treatment goals and modify interventions as clinically indicated.
- Complete clinical documentation, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries within required timeframes.
- Conduct crisis intervention and risk assessments, including suicide and homicide assessments when necessary.
- Coordinate care with physicians, psychiatrists, primary care providers, probation officers, social service agencies, and other community partners.
- Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and case consultations.
- Educate clients and families on addiction, mental health, recovery, medication adherence, coping skills, and community resources.
- Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations, HIPAA standards, accreditation requirements, and agency policies.
- Participate in clinical supervision, staff meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and ongoing professional development.
- Assist with discharge planning and aftercare coordination to promote sustained recovery.
Qualifications
Required:
- Master’s degree in counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related behavioral health field.
- Current unrestricted state license as a Licensed Professional Counselor of Mental Health (LPCMH), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or equivalent.
- Minimum of (3) year of clinical experience treating individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders (preferred).
- Knowledge of DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria.
- Experience facilitating individual and group counseling.
- Strong clinical assessment, crisis intervention, and documentation skills.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR).
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC), Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS), or equivalent credential.
- Experience working in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs.
- Experience with trauma-informed care and harm reduction approaches.
- Bilingual abilities are a plus.

- Knowledge of confidentiality regulations, HIPAA, and 42 CFR Part 2.

- Strong organizational, time management, and critical thinking skills.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, and staff.
- Ability to perform computer-based documentation throughout the workday.
Work Environment
This position is based in an outpatient behavioral health treatment facility serving individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Services may include office-based counseling, telehealth, community collaboration, and crisis response as needed.
