We are seeking a dependable, hardworking, and safety-conscious School Groundskeeper / Maintenance Assistant to help maintain our school grounds, buildings, and facilities. This position plays an important role in providing students, staff, and visitors with a clean, safe, attractive, and well-maintained school environment.
The ideal candidate is someone who takes pride in their work, can work independently while also being part of a team, and is comfortable performing a variety of outdoor groundskeeping, cleaning, and minor maintenance tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain school grounds, sidewalks, parking areas, playgrounds, and other outdoor spaces
- Pick up litter and debris and keep dumpsters, trash areas, and surrounding areas clean and orderly
- Blow and clean sidewalks, parking areas, walkways, and other paved surfaces
- Remove leaves, branches, weeds, and other debris from school grounds
- Perform basic landscaping tasks, including trimming, pruning, watering, and maintaining plants and landscaped areas
- Monitor irrigation systems and report leaks, damage, or other issues
- Maintain clean and presentable building exteriors, entrances, walkways, and common areas
- Remove cobwebs, dirt, bugs, and debris from exterior areas, lights, doors, handrails, and other surfaces
- Assist with power washing and other deep-cleaning projects as needed
- Perform minor repairs and general maintenance tasks under the direction of the supervisor
- Assist with painting, touch-ups, and other basic interior and exterior improvement projects
- Assist with moving furniture, equipment, supplies, and other items as needed
- Complete routine preventive maintenance tasks and report potential safety or maintenance concerns
- Help prepare classrooms, offices, and other areas for use, events, or school activities
- Maintain organized maintenance and storage areas and report supply needs
- Use mobile devices and work-related applications to document completed tasks and communicate maintenance needs
- Communicate clearly with school administrators, teachers, staff
- Work cooperatively with maintenance staff
- Help ensure school facilities and grounds meet cleanliness, safety, and appearance standards
- Perform other groundskeeping and minor maintenance duties as assigned
Qualifications & Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Previous groundskeeping, maintenance, landscaping, custodial, or related experience preferred
- Basic knowledge of common hand and power tools
- Ability to safely operate equipment such as lawn mowers, string trimmers, blowers, pressure washers, and other maintenance equipment
- Ability to follow instructions, prioritize tasks, and work with limited supervision
- Dependable attendance and a strong work ethic
- Professional, courteous, and positive attitude
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- School or facilities maintenance experience is a plus, but training may be provided to the right candidate
Physical Requirements
The position requires the ability to:
- Walk and stand for extended periods
- Climb stairs and ladders and safely access various areas of the school and grounds
- Bend, stoop, kneel, reach overhead, push, and pull as needed
- Use hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment
- Safely operate groundskeeping and maintenance equipment
- Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally; heavier items may be moved with assistance or appropriate equipment
- Work outdoors and remain exposed to varying weather conditions
- Visually identify maintenance concerns, debris, landscaping issues, and potential safety hazards
- Hear and respond to verbal communications, alarms, equipment sounds, and other potential safety concerns
Work Environment
This is an on-site, hands-on position requiring regular work both indoors and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, dust, dirt, landscaping materials, cleaning products, heights, confined areas, and other conditions associated with school grounds and facility maintenance.
All work must be performed in accordance with school safety procedures and applicable regulations. The safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors is a top priority.
