We partner with leading sponsors and CROs to conduct Phase II–IV studies across multiple therapeutic areas, including surgical and inpatient research requiring licensed staff on the floor overnight.
We are seeking a Clinical Research Night RN to provide overnight coverage, safety monitoring, and protocol-driven care for research participants.
Position Summary
The Clinical Research Night RN is responsible for the nursing care and safety of clinical trial participants during night hours. This role includes continuous monitoring of inpatient/overnight research subjects, administration of investigational products and protocol-specific procedures within the RN scope of practice, detailed documentation, and collaboration with investigators and daytime research staff to ensure 24/7 continuity of care.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care and continuous safety monitoring for research participants admitted or observed overnight per protocol.
- Perform protocol-specific assessments and procedures during night hours, including:
- Focused and comprehensive nursing assessments
- Vital signs, pain assessments, neurologic checks, intake/output, and other clinical measurements
- Timed study procedures (e.g., blood draws, specimen handling, ECGs, questionnaires)
- Administration of investigational products (oral, injectable, or IV) according to protocol and nursing standards.
- Monitor participants for adverse events, with special attention to post-surgical and high‑risk protocols; promptly intervene within scope and escalate to investigators/physicians as needed.
- Accurately document all assessments, interventions, and protocol activities in source documents, flowsheets, and electronic data capture (EDC) systems as required.
- Communicate effectively with the day-shift research team, providing thorough handoffs and updates on participant status, events, and any protocol deviations.
- Educate participants about overnight procedures, safety monitoring, and follow-up requirements; address questions and promote comfort throughout their stay.
- Collaborate with hospital staff (if in an inpatient setting) to integrate research activities into standard night-shift workflows while maintaining protocol compliance.
- Adhere to all study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), ICH guidelines, FDA and HIPAA regulations, and Arizona Research Center and hospital policies.
- Assist with maintenance of study logs, medication and investigational product accountability, and other essential documents related to night-shift activities.
- Participate in training, competency checks, and quality improvement initiatives related to overnight and inpatient research.
Qualifications
Required:
- Current, active RN license in the state of Arizona (in good standing).
- 1+ year of recent clinical nursing experience, preferably in an acute or inpatient setting (e.g., med-surg, telemetry, step-down, ICU, PACU, or ED).
- Willingness and ability to consistently work night shifts, including some weekends and holidays as required by study protocols.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is required; additional certifications related to neonatal ventilator management or sterile processing are a plus.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills with a focus on patient safety in low-resource/night-time environments.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with off-site/on-call providers and the day team.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow complex, time-sensitive protocols.
- Basic proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office, and electronic documentation systems.
Preferred (we are willing to train RNs who are new to research):
- Prior experience as a research nurse or clinical research coordinator.
- Experience with inpatient or post-operative care, or monitoring high‑acuity patients overnight.
- Knowledge of GCP/ICH guidelines, FDA regulations, and HIPAA as they relate to clinical research.
- Familiarity with EDC systems and EMR platforms.
- Certification in clinical research (e.g., ACRP, SoCRA) or interest in obtaining certification.
Physical & Working Conditions
- Work performed on-site in clinical and inpatient environments during night hours.
- Frequent standing and walking; periodic bending, lifting, and repositioning of participants (up to ~20–30 lbs with assistance as needed).
- Exposure to standard clinical and hospital environments, with appropriate safety measures in place.
