The Village Retail Experience Assistant supports the operation of the Storrowton Village Museum’s John Potter Store during The Big E. The position is primarily responsible for cashiering and providing friendly, helpful customer service while supporting the museum's educational mission and helping visitors connect merchandise and experiences to the history of Storrowton Village.
Hours: Fridays 3:45pm-9pm, Saturdays & Sundays 9:30am-9pm
This position is seasonal for the duration of The Big E, September 18-October 4, plus training in August and early September.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Visitor Engagement
- Welcome visitors to the John Potter Store and provide exceptional customer service.
- Interpret the historical significance of merchandise and its connection to Storrowton Village Museum, its collections, and educational programs.
- Answer visitor questions accurately and enthusiastically while promoting museum programs, events, and experiences.
- Encourage exploration of the museum campus and its historic buildings.
Retail Operations
- Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system and process transactions accurately.
- Maintain an attractive, organized, and fully stocked retail environment.
Educational Demonstrations
- Coordinate and operate the museum's interactive candle dipping experience.
- Prepare materials and equipment for demonstrations.
- Provide clear instruction while ensuring participant safety.
- Interpret the historical importance of candle making in early New England life.
- Package completed candles for participants.
- Maintain inventory of demonstration supplies and ensure the work area remains clean and organized.
- A volunteer may also be assigned to this area to specifically provide support with hands-on activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in retail, museums, education, tourism, hospitality, or customer service.
- Interest in American history, historic preservation, or traditional crafts.
- Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to engage visitors of all ages in an educational setting.
- Basic computer skills and experience operating a point-of-sale system preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to bend, reach, and move retail displays and merchandise.
- Ability to safely operate equipment associated with the candle dipping experience.
- Must be able to climb 5 stairs to enter work location. Due to the historic nature of the building, this is not located in an accessible location.
- Reliability, professional quirkiness and a sense of humor a must!
