The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community and exceed expectations.
Our DPSS Housing Security is a full-service, 24-hour public safety department that works to ensure a safe and secure environment for the University of Michigan community with a focus within Michigan Housing. Our officers and staff are highly trained security professionals equipped to serve all members of our community. We manage all security operations within Michigan Housing and offer an integrated and collaborative approach to safety and security, partnering across the University to provide a safe community while improving the quality of life for all those living, learning, working and visiting our community.
The DPSS Housing Security Department is looking to fill multiple Security Officer positions. Housing Security operates seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Work schedules may include nights, afternoons, weekends, holidays, and occasional unanticipated overtime. This is a uniformed position that adheres to the DPSS uniform dress code. Patrol assignments may include both mobile duties and building-specific responsibilities.
Pay Range Information
- The pay range for new external hires is $23.53 to $28.63 per hour, based on education and experience.
- The full pay range for current DPSS Security Officers is $23.53 to $29.77 per hour, based on education and experience.
This salary information is based on the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM), effective as of December 21st, 2025. The new contract will be available online soon.
Responsibilities
Under the direction of the your Housing Security Sergeant and the management team, you will perform the following tasks:
- Ensure public safety, protect our assets and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire and security agencies; act calmly in emergency situations and use emergency equipment
- Work closely with the Division of Student Life staff, de-escalate non-violent situations; investigate criminal activity; assist student, staff and visitors as needed
- Patrol Michigan Housing buildings and surrounding areas and monitor fire, security, and access control alarm systems
- Detect safety hazards and criminal elements
- Use your customer service skills and cultural safety mindset to respectfully communicate and work with all community members
- Maintain confidentiality in all matters
- Prepare incident and security reports
- Ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs as part of the routine patrol
- Provide services such as but not limited to: escorts, wayfinding, unlocks, motorists assists, well-being checks, property control, and traffic and crowd control
- Move equipment such as barricades and fire extinguishers
- Work collaboratively to support all departments within DPSS
Required Qualifications
- High school or GED equivalent and one (1) year of experience in a security, fire, military, customer service, or emergency management field
- Experience with the enforcement of fire, safety, and security practices
- Skillset in handling emergency situations and using associated equipment
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic keyboarding
- A valid driver's license and a driving record with less than 6 points
- You must pass a comprehensive public safety background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination
