The primary goal of a Heavy Equipment Mechanic is to ensure that large-scale machinery—such as bulldozers, excavators, cranes, and tractors—operates safely and efficiently. This role involves both scheduled preventative maintenance and high-pressure emergency repairs, often performed in the field under varying weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Use advanced computerized diagnostic tools and traditional "mechanical intuition" to identify malfunctions in engines, transmissions, and fuel systems.
- System Repairs: Overhaul or replace major components, including:
- Hydraulics: Pumps, valves, cylinders, and hoses.
- Electrical: Wiring harnesses, starters, alternators, and control modules.
- Drivetrains: Transmissions, differentials, and final drives.
- Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine oil changes, filter replacements, and track/tire inspections to prevent costly downtime.
- Welding & Fabrication: Use torches and welding equipment to repair structural frames, buckets, and attachments.
- Safety Compliance: Ensure all equipment meets OSHA and environmental regulations, maintaining meticulous service records for every machine.
