Custodian Job Description
Position Summary
The Custodian supports the mission of Monarch Early Learning Center by ensuring a clean, safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for children, families, staff, and visitors. This position is responsible for the daily cleaning, sanitation, maintenance, and appearance of the facility, both indoors and outdoors. The Custodian plays a critical role in maintaining compliance with state childcare licensing requirements, health and safety standards, and organizational policies.

Essential Functions
- Perform daily cleaning and sanitation of classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, kitchens, staff areas, and common spaces.
- Vacuum carpets, sweep and mop hard floors, and maintain all flooring surfaces.
- Empty trash and recycling containers throughout the facility and ensure proper disposal of waste.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, fixtures, and dispensers.
- Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces in accordance with health and safety protocols.
- Monitor and replenish cleaning supplies, paper products, soap, and sanitizing materials.
- Maintain cleanliness of entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces.
- Assist with seasonal maintenance, including snow and ice removal, salting walkways, and general exterior upkeep.
- Perform minor maintenance tasks and report facility concerns, safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, or repair needs to management.
- Assist with room setups, furniture movement, and facility preparation for special events, meetings, and activities.
- Ensure all cleaning chemicals and equipment are used, stored, and maintained according to manufacturer instructions and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Follow all childcare licensing regulations, workplace safety procedures, and infection control practices.
- Support opening and closing procedures as assigned.
- Create and maintain a safe environment by reporting suspicious activity, safety concerns, or potential child welfare issues immediately.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director or designee.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous custodial, janitorial, facilities maintenance, or related experience preferred.
- Ability to read and understand cleaning product labels, safety instructions, and SDS sheets.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, families, contractors, and visitors.
- CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens training preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire.

The employee must frequently:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb stairs.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Operate cleaning equipment and custodial tools.
- Use repetitive hand and arm movements.
- Climb ladders and perform work at varying heights when necessary.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Work Environment
This position regularly works in childcare classrooms, offices, kitchens, restrooms, playgrounds, and outdoor areas. The employee may be exposed to cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids, dust, noise, and seasonal weather conditions. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety procedures must be followed at all times.
Licensing and Compliance Requirements
The Custodian must comply with all applicable Michigan Child Care Licensing Rules, health department regulations, workplace safety standards, and Monarch Early Learning Center policies and procedures. Successful completion of required background checks and clearances is required prior to employment and throughout continued employment.
