The Amusement Ride and Tramway (ART) Unit is a specialized Unit within Cal/OSHA that protects and improves the safety of passengers riding amusement rides and passenger tramways. Associate Safety Engineers (Amusement Rides) are in the field every day conducting inspections, investigating accidents and responding to complaints associated with amusement rides and passenger tramways (aka ski lifts and gondolas). Members of the ART team also set and enforce standards, provide outreach, education, and assistance, issue permits, certifications, and approvals.

Under the general direction of the Senior Safety Engineer (Amusement Rides) with the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Amusement Ride and Tramway Unit (ART), the Associate Safety Engineer (Amusement Rides) is responsible for performing independently the full range of professional journey-level safety engineering work pertinent to all aspects of amusement rides and tramways related to the Cal/OSHA program. The Associate Safety Engineer (Amusement Rides) conducts safety inspections, accident investigations, consultations, and other journey-level assignments, including the most difficult, related to amusement rides and passenger tramways throughout the State. The Associate Safety Engineer (Amusement Rides) performs all work in accordance with DIR-DOSH policies, DOSH Compliance Policy and Procedure Manual, ART Policies and Procedures, and DIR-DOSH Directives, and Memorandums.

Working Conditions
This job is located at: 2 MacArthur Place, Suite 700, Santa Ana, CA 92707.
The Associate Safety Engineer (Amusement Rides) is required to perform primarily field work and some office work. Field work is conducted mostly outdoors in a variety of temperature and weather conditions. The Associate Safety Engineer (Amusement Rides) travels throughout the State, primarily in an assigned area, and includes overnight stays of varying length and frequency. May be scheduled to work weekends and/or nights as needed to meet operational needs of the Unit.
The essential functions of the Associate Safety Engineer (Amusement Rides) require the incumbent to be physically agile, perform work duties in a variety of environments including extreme heat, extreme cold, working at height and navigate various terrain obstacles including wet, icy, and other slippery surfaces. The incumbent will be required to climb structures to access areas for inspection. Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, ramps, and structures. Will be required to participate in work that requires the use of aerial work platforms, scissor lifts or other similar types of equipment needed for access. Must be able to navigate confined areas, crawl spaces, and other areas such as tubes, pits, passages, and shafts. May be required to travel out of state to attend work related meetings, training or other functions.
