Purchasing Manager – Medical Device Manufacturing
Compensation: $100,000–$120,000 annually
Employment Type: Direct Hire
We are partnering with an established medical device manufacturer in Vernon Hills that is looking for an experienced Procurement & Purchasing Manager to lead its purchasing function and team.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys being involved in both the strategic and operational sides of purchasing.
You'll lead the purchasing team while taking an active role in supplier strategy, sourcing, negotiations, vendor performance, purchasing processes, cost management, supply continuity, and cross-functional collaboration.
This isn't a role for someone who wants to manage completely from the sidelines. We're looking for a leader who can develop their team while also getting into the details when needed.
What You'll Be Responsible For
- Lead, coach, and develop the Purchasing team, including performance management, training, staffing, and career development.
- Develop and execute purchasing and sourcing strategies supporting manufacturing operations.
- Manage day-to-day purchasing activities, including RFPs, vendor quotations, purchase requisitions, purchase orders, and supplier acknowledgements.
- Identify, evaluate, and qualify new suppliers while continuously improving the existing supplier base.
- Lead supplier negotiations involving pricing, quality expectations, lead times, payment terms, service levels, and contractual agreements.
- Monitor supplier performance and proactively address quality, delivery, cost, and supply-risk concerns.
- Conduct supplier analysis, due diligence, and on-site supplier audits in partnership with Quality.
- Participate in make-versus-buy decisions and provide recommendations based on cost, capacity, quality, and supply considerations.
- Partner closely with Supply Chain, Quality, Materials, Finance, Manufacturing, and other internal stakeholders.
- Support inventory and material planning initiatives, including MOQ decisions and S&OP/SIOP activities.
- Manage supplier agreements, contract renewals, and purchasing-related documentation.
- Develop and monitor purchasing KPIs, cost-saving initiatives, department goals, and continuous improvement projects.
- Support ERP/MRP purchasing processes and help improve purchasing workflows and reporting.
- Partner with international stakeholders and suppliers to support global purchasing and supply-chain initiatives.
- Help identify and mitigate potential supply disruptions before they impact production.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations, Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive purchasing, procurement, sourcing, or supply-chain experience.
- 3+ years of experience leading and developing a purchasing/procurement team.
- Experience working within a regulated manufacturing environment; medical device experience is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with FDA-regulated manufacturing and/or ISO 13485 is highly preferred.
- Strong supplier sourcing, evaluation, negotiation, and relationship-management experience.
- Demonstrated experience negotiating cost, contracts, lead times, payment terms, and supplier performance expectations.
- Experience working cross-functionally with Quality, Manufacturing, Materials, Engineering, Finance, and Supply Chain.
- Strong understanding of ERP/MRP-driven purchasing processes. SAP experience is preferred but not required.
- Ability to balance strategic procurement initiatives with hands-on operational purchasing responsibilities.
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to build trust with both internal teams and external suppliers.
