I'm seeking a seventh piano teacher to work for my teaching service, A Piano Grows In Brooklyn.
The teacher will earn $60 / hour to teach lessons at the homes of students in Brooklyn. You will regularly teach a minimum of 10 hours per week, and you can teach as many as you wish. Lessons are grouped geographically to minimize travel time.
This job may be the best fit for a piano teacher who enjoys teaching, but doesn’t like the tedium of starting up, publicizing, and administratively maintaining a business. By working for me, I will provide you with all of your students. I will also provide you with teaching materials, help you structure and maintain your teaching schedule, and facilitate your payments. All you need to do is show up and teach.
Here are the teacher qualities I’m seeking. It's ok if you don't possess 100% of these qualities, but you should fit many of them.
Technical
- has solid piano skills; confident teaching beginner through intermediate students
- has the ability to read sheet music, read and write chord charts, and can explain music theory
- has some experience teaching piano
- comfortable teaching outside classical repertoire (pop, improvisation, songs by ear, and exploring the outlier songs that some students are most interested in)
- is open to teaching younger students, possibly at a minimum of 5-years-old
Personal
- is social, polite, friendly, and fun
- is responsible and trustworthy
- is comfortable communicating with me via text, emails, and Google docs
Logistical
- has an intention to stay in New York City for at least the next year
- has a sufficient amount of availability
- wants to teach a minimum of 10 hours on a weekly basis
If you own or have access to a space where you can teach piano lessons, let me know. This may include a portion of your residence where you feel comfortable teaching. This is not required, but could be helpful.
You will interview with me in late July or early August and begin teaching in late August or September of 2026.
Your schedule will fill gradually over the first 1 to 4 months, as requests come in. By November, I project that you will be able to be teaching 10 to 25 hours, if desired. For this reason, certain teachers might find it financially suitable to be working part-time at another job during the first few months of working with me. Before long, you will have the option of making this your full-time job. If you are a teacher who is excited to take on a large roster of students, far above my 10 hour minimum, that is a plus.
A Piano Grows in Brooklyn has operated for over 16 years, offering high-quality private instruction and regular student recitals. Demand for lessons consistently exceeds our teaching capacity, and so we're expanding our staff through this position.
The neighborhoods from which we receive the most home lesson inquiries are: Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Clinton Hill, Park Slope, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Ridgewood, Bed Stuy, Fort Greene, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Lefferts Gardens, and Ditmas Park. Applicants should be ready to commute to these neighborhoods to teach lessons.
The first step in applying for this job is recording and sending me a video introducing yourself. The video does not have to be highly produced. Propping up your smartphone on your dresser is good enough. The video should include you playing 20 to 45 seconds of music. Additionally, introduce yourself to the camera. Say a little bit about who you are, your experience with music, and your experience with teaching. The total length of the video should be between 60 and 120 seconds. Posting an unlisted video on Youtube and sending me the link is one way to carry this out.
