The Humane Society of Yates County is seeking compassionate, dependable, and hardworking individuals to join our animal care team. This position is responsible for providing daily care to shelter animals while helping maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for both animals and visitors.
This is a hands-on position that requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Successful candidates must be comfortable performing physical tasks, working in all weather conditions, and caring for animals with varying medical and behavioral needs.
Responsibilities Include:
- Feeding, watering, and monitoring dogs and cats
- Cleaning and disinfecting kennels, cages, litter boxes, and animal housing areas
- Laundry, dishes, and general housekeeping duties
- Providing enrichment, exercise, and socialization opportunities for animals
- Monitoring animal health and promptly reporting concerns
- Assisting with animal handling, admissions, and adoptions as directed
- Working cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and members of the public
- Maintaining accurate records and following shelter protocols
- Assisting with special projects and daily operational needs as assigned
Qualifications:
- Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential
- Ability to work independently and stay productive without constant supervision
- Comfortable handling dogs and cats of various sizes, breeds, and temperaments
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and occasional additional shifts as needed
- Previous animal care experience is preferred but not required; training will be provided
Compensation & Schedule:
- $16.00–$18.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications
- Part-time, approximately 12–24 hours per week
- Additional hours may be available based on staffing and shelter needs
- Paid sick leave in accordance with New York State law
