As we continue to expand, we are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer / Department Head to lead our Mechanical Engineering Department and play a key role in the firm's continued growth and success.
Position Summary
The Senior Mechanical Engineer / Department Head will be responsible for the technical leadership, management, and growth of the Mechanical Engineering Department. This individual will oversee HVAC design and engineering efforts, manage departmental staff and resources, maintain quality standards, and serve as a key client-facing representative of the firm.
The ideal candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer with strong technical expertise, proven leadership capabilities, and extensive experience managing mechanical engineering projects from concept through construction.
Key Responsibilities
Department Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Mechanical Engineering Department.
- Oversee staffing, workload planning, resource allocation, and project assignments.
- Establish and maintain departmental standards, procedures, and quality control measures.
- Support recruiting, training, and professional development initiatives.
- Contribute to strategic planning and departmental growth initiatives.
Engineering & Project Management
- Lead the design and delivery of HVAC systems for commercial, institutional, mixed-use, and other building projects.
- Manage mechanical engineering projects from planning and design through construction administration and project closeout.
- Coordinate closely with Plumbing, Fire Protection, Electrical, Architectural, and Structural disciplines.
- Review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, energy codes, and industry standards.
- Conduct engineering investigations, feasibility studies, and technical analyses.
- Participate in commissioning activities and construction-phase services.
Client & Project Coordination
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Attend project meetings and presentations.
- Review and respond to RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings.
- Conduct site visits and prepare field observation reports.
- Monitor project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure successful project execution.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License.
- Minimum 10 years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably within a consulting engineering environment.
- Minimum 7 years of experience managing and coordinating MEP building systems projects.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and managing technical staff.
- Strong HVAC design experience for commercial and institutional building projects.
- Working knowledge of NYC Building Codes, Energy Codes, and permitting processes.
- Excellent communication, client management, and technical writing skills.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.
