Position Summary
The Phlebotomy / Lab Assistant plays a critical role in supporting both specimen collection and general laboratory operations. This position combines direct patient interaction (phlebotomy) with essential back-end laboratory tasks (sample handling, accessioning, and quality control support).
Key ResponsibilitiesPhlebotomy & Specimen Collection
- Collect venous and capillary blood samples from patients following proper phlebotomy techniques and infection control guidelines.
- Verify patient identity, test orders, and labeling to ensure accurate specimen identification.
- Prepare and organize collection supplies for on-site and off-site specimen collection.
- Provide clear instructions and compassionate care to patients during specimen collection.
- Handle and transport specimens according to OM Diagnostic Laboratories’ protocols.
Sample Processing & Accessioning
- Receive and log incoming biological specimens into the LIS accurately and efficiently.
- Centrifuge, aliquot, and prepare specimens for testing or referral labs.
- Ensure appropriate storage and handling of samples based on test requirements.
Laboratory Support
- Maintain adequate inventory of phlebotomy and lab supplies; assist in ordering and restocking.
- Perform daily quality control checks on equipment as assigned.
- Assist technologists with routine tasks, including slide preparation and sample organization.
- Support compliance with CLIA, COLA, and OSHA regulations and internal SOPs.
Client & Patient Interaction
- Answer basic patient and provider questions regarding specimen collection and test procedures.
- Handle phone calls courteously and direct inquiries to appropriate staff.
General Duties
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Participate in training, competency assessments, and continuing education.
- Assist with other duties as assigned by laboratory management.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, or related discipline).
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (or state credential).
- At least 6+ months of phlebotomy or medical laboratory experience.
- Basic computer skills; familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) a plus.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred:
- Previous experience in a clinical laboratory or physician office laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality standards.
- Additional training or certification in laboratory procedures beyond phlebotomy.

Working Conditions
- This role requires standing for extended periods, handling biological specimens, and wearing appropriate PPE.
- May involve occasional travel to off-site specimen collection locations.
