We are seeking a compassionate, dependable Direct Support Partner to provide one-on-one support to an adult who is blind. The ideal candidate will have experience working with people who are blind or have low vision. They will support the client in developing the skills and confidence needed to live as independently as possible at home and in the community. This role focuses on teaching and reinforcing nonvisual techniques for daily living, orientation and mobility, and community navigation while promoting independence, safety, and self-determination.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement daily living strategies from a non-visual perspective (cleaning, laundry, household organization)
- Provide instruction and support in navigating the apartment building (elevator, laundry room)
- Assist with navigating and promoting independence in grocery shopping and meal preparation
- Teach safe street-crossing skills and nonvisual navigation within the neighborhood
- Assist and provide instructions on using public transportation independently, from a nonvisual perspective
- Assist with learning and using the OKO app, a navigation and street-crossing assistant for people who are blind or have low vision
Qualifications:
- Must be patient, empathetic, dependable, responsible, punctual, and an effective communicator
- Must have experience working with people who are blind or have low vision.
- Must have Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist certification, training or experience
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent accepted
- Persons with a bachelor degree in a human service area will be considered for additional tasks
Required Work Experience:
- 2 or more years supporting individuals with varying needs, including persons with developmental disabilities required
Skills
- Must have excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Working knowledge and ability to use MS Word and email
- Ability to work with efficiency both independently as well as in team environment
- Strong creative, critical and solutions-based thinking
- Enjoy working with developmentally disabled individuals to improve their quality of life
- CPR and First Aid required or may be obtained with 90 days of employment

As a Direct Support Professional, you will be essential in providing compassionate care and support to individuals with disabilities, including those with developmental disabilities and autism. Your core skills in home and community care, direct support, and effective communication will enable you to assist clients with activities of daily living (ADLs) while fostering independence. Additionally, your premium skills in behavior management and special education will enhance your ability to create a positive and inclusive environment.
