As we continue to grow, we are seeking a highly capable Controller to help lead our financial operations and provide the strategic financial insight necessary to support continued growth.
Job Overview
The Controller is responsible for the company's financial integrity by leading all accounting and financial operations. This individual will oversee financial reporting, cash flow management, budgeting, job costing, internal controls, and financial analysis while ensuring timely, accurate information is available to leadership for sound business decisions.
This is a leadership position requiring someone proactive, detail-oriented, highly organized, and passionate about building efficient financial systems that support operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Leadership:
- Prepare accurate monthly financial statements by the 10th business day of each month.
- Develop and maintain annual budgets and quarterly forecasts.
- Prepare weekly and 13-week cash flow forecasts.
- Analyze profitability by division, department, and major projects.
- Present financial reports and recommendations to the leadership team.
- Identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities.
Accounting Operations
- Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll, and general accounting.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate financial records.
- Complete monthly and year-end closing processes.
- Coordinate annual tax preparation and work with external CPA firms.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
Cash Flow & Banking
- Manage daily cash position and liquidity.
- Improve collections and reduce outstanding receivables.
- Monitor lines of credit and banking relationships.
- Prioritize vendor payments based on cash flow strategy.
- Assist ownership with financing and capital planning.
Job Costing & Operational Support
- Ensure labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs are accurately allocated to projects.
- Review project profitability and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Partner with operations leaders to improve margins and operational efficiency.
- Maintain accurate Work-in-Progress reporting.
Reporting & Analytics
Develop meaningful dashboards and reports including:
- Revenue by division
- Gross profit by division
- Net profit
- Labor efficiency
- Overhead expenses
- Accounts Receivable aging
- Cash flow
- Budget vs. Actual performance
- Inventory performance
- Equipment utilization
Systems & Process Improvement
- Maintain the integrity of our business management and accounting systems.
- Improve accounting workflows through automation and process improvements.
- Establish and maintain internal financial controls.
- Document financial procedures and best practices.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Sales tax filings
- Payroll tax compliance
- Workers' Compensation audits
- Insurance audits
- Business licensing requirements
- Annual financial audit preparation
Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the accounting team.
- Establish clear expectations and accountability.
- Foster a culture of integrity, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with department leaders to improve financial performance across the organization.
Success Measures
Success in this position will be measured by:
- Accurate monthly financial statements delivered by the 10th business day.
- Reliable weekly and 13-week cash flow forecasting.
- Reduction in Accounts Receivable aging.
- Accurate job costing and profitability reporting.
- Timely payroll and vendor payments.
- Strong internal controls with minimal accounting adjustments.
- Meaningful financial reporting that helps leadership make better business decisions.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Minimum five years of progressive accounting leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting principles.
- Experience managing accounting staff.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience with ERP or business management software.
Preferred
- CPA or CMA designation.
- Experience in landscape construction, contracting, service, or retail industries.
- Experience with job costing.
- Experience in multi-division organizations.
- Strong cash flow forecasting and budgeting experience.
