Position Title: Library Director
Status: Part-Time (32 Hours/Week) | Includes evenings & weekends
Compensation: $19.00 – $21.00 / hour (commensurate with experience) Reports To: Library Board of Trustees
About the Role
The J.C. Wheeler Public Library is seeking an energetic, community-minded Library Director to lead our library into its next chapter. As Director, you will serve as a vital link between the library and the public, ensuring our services, collection, and programming adapt to meet the evolving needs of our community.

Key Responsibilities: Operations & Community Engagement
- Direct and oversee all day-to-day operations while collaborating with the Board to establish and execute long-term strategic goals.
- Maintain a visible presence on the floor—greeting, assisting, and guiding patrons, and periodically supporting operations at the circulation desk.
- Evaluate and expand outreach initiatives, special programming, and public events to boost community participation.
Leadership & Personnel Management
- Recruit, schedule, train, evaluate, and mentor library staff to foster a positive, patron-first team culture.
- Handle personnel matters (including promotions or disciplinary actions) in according with library policy and legal standards.
Fiscal & Administrative Oversight
- Prepare, present, and monitor the annual operational budget to ensure responsible, effective, and transparent use of library funds.
- Oversee library collection development, purchasing, and facility/materials maintenance.
- Oversee the operation of the library’s network and Integrated Library System (ILS/OPAC) in coordination with IT support/vendors.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. (Degree in Library Science, Information Studies, or related field preferred).
- Certification: Must hold or obtain a Level 4 Certification from the Library of Michigan within one (1) year of hire (required for state aid compliance).
- Experience:
- Prior experience working in a public library setting preferred.
- Demonstrated administrative and supervisory/leadership experience strongly preferred.
- Skills: Excellent communication skills, strong financial aptitude, tech-savviness, and a customer-service orientation.
- Availability: Flexible schedule required, including availability for evenings and weekend rotation.
