Duties
- Review and analyze medical records to assign accurate ICD-10, ICD-9, CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), and DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) codes for inpatient and outpatient services
- Ensure proper documentation for coding accuracy, including medical terminology, procedures, diagnoses, and treatment details
- Prepare and submit clean claims for insurance third-party billing, verifying coverage and benefits with health insurance providers
- Manage electronic health record (EHR) systems for billing and coding purposes, ensuring data integrity and compliance with privacy regulations
- Follow up on unpaid or denied claims through medical collection processes to maximize revenue cycle efficiency
- Maintain detailed records of coding activities, billing transactions, and correspondence related to insurance claims
- Stay current with updates in medical coding standards, insurance policies, and healthcare regulations to ensure ongoing compliance
Skills
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10, ICD-9, CPT coding, DRG classifications, and medical terminology
- Experience with electronic health record (EHR) or electronic medical record (EMR) systems for billing and coding management
- Familiarity with health insurance processes, including pre-authorizations, claims submission, denials management, and medical collections
- Understanding of revenue cycle management principles to optimize cash flow and reduce claim rejections
- Ability to interpret complex medical records accurately for coding purposes in both inpatient and outpatient settings
- Excellent attention to detail combined with strong organizational skills to handle multiple claims efficiently
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients
