Alternative Family Living (AFL) Direct Support Professional (DSP) / AFL Caregiver
Position Summary
The Alternative Family Living (AFL) Direct Support Professional provides residential support, supervision, and skill development services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in a family-style home environment. The AFL Caregiver promotes independence, community inclusion, personal growth, health, safety, and well-being while supporting goals identified in the individual's Individual Support Plan (ISP). AFL services are designed to provide individualized care within a nurturing home environment that encourages self-determination and full participation in community life.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide daily supervision and support in a safe, stable, family-oriented living environment.
- Assist individuals with activities of daily living including bathing, grooming, dressing, meal preparation, medication reminders, and personal hygiene as needed.
- Teach and reinforce independent living skills, including household chores, budgeting, cooking, shopping, and self-care.
- Support individuals in achieving goals outlined in their ISP and person-centered plans.
- Facilitate community engagement through recreational activities, employment opportunities, volunteer activities, social events, and religious or educational participation based on individual preferences.
- Encourage self-advocacy, informed decision-making, and personal choice.
- Ensure the health, safety, welfare, and rights of individuals receiving services.
- Monitor and document progress, incidents, behavioral concerns, and service delivery activities according to agency and Medicaid requirements.
- Maintain regular communication with guardians, family members, case managers, healthcare providers, and agency staff.
- Transport individuals to appointments, employment, community activities, and other approved destinations as needed.
- Maintain a clean, welcoming, and safe home environment that meets state and agency standards.
QualificationsEducation
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- College coursework in Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, or a related field preferred.
Experience
- Experience supporting individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, behavioral health needs, or traumatic brain injuries preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of person-centered planning principles.
- Ability to teach independent living and social skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Patience, compassion, and commitment to supporting individual choice and dignity.
- Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies and crisis situations.
Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age (or according to agency requirements).
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Reliable transportation and proof of insurance.
- Successful completion of criminal background checks and agency screening requirements.
- Completion of all required NCDHHS, NC Innovations Waiver, and agency training.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, transfer, and assist individuals as necessary.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform household tasks.
- Ability to accompany individuals during community activities and appointments.
Working Conditions
- Services are provided in the caregiver's residence or approved AFL home setting.
- Position requires availability for ongoing supervision and support based on the individual's needs.
Pay: $16.00 - $21.00 per hour
