Overview:
Under the supervision of the Food Services Manager, the Food Service Specialist ensures efficient, safe, and healthy operation of the kitchen. The Food Service Specialist will prepare and cook large batches of food that will be served to guests and staff.
Classification: Full-time, hourly, non-exempt.
Wage: $20.50/hour

Schedule:
- Days: 5a - 1p and 12p - 8:30p
- Flexibility required
- Attendance at mandatory staff meetings and training
Reports To: Food Services Manager
Supervises: None.

Essential Functions:
- Assists the Food Services Manager with donation sorting and food pantry organization.
- Cleans, cuts, prepares, and cooks meat, fish, or poultry to a safe temperature.
- Prepares and cooks various items according to menus, special dietary or nutritional requirements, or the number of portions to be served.
- Bake breads, rolls, and pastries.
- Apportions and serves food to guests and staff.
- Washes cooking equipment such as pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and other pieces.
- Assists the Food Services Manager with the development, compilation, and maintenance of food use and expenditure records.
- Assists the Food Services Manager with supply and equipment inventories.
- Assists the Food Services Manager with weekly meal menu planning.
- Ensures the cleanliness and functional operation of kitchen equipment, appliances, and work areas by routinely cleaning and inspecting each piece.
The Food Service Specialist will play an integral role in ensuring the successful operation of food services at Lawrence Community Shelter. Qualifications:
- High school or vocational school coursework in kitchen basics, such as food safety, is preferred.
- One (1) year of institutional cooking experience is preferred.
- One (1) year of community-based social services experience or other related experience with marginalized populations (i.e., the economically disadvantaged; racial and ethnic minorities; the uninsured, low-income children; the elderly; the homeless; those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); those with other chronic health conditions, including severe mental illness and substance abuse disorders; individuals with physical or developmental disabilities; veterans; and those who identify as LGBTQIA+) is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic understanding of or ability to learn sanitation and regulations for workplace safety.
- Basic understanding of or ability to learn food handling techniques, preparation, and cooking procedures.
- Must be able to work quickly and efficiently.
- Must be able to work well as part of a team.
- Must be able to work well under pressure.
- Ability to maintain personal cleanliness.

- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- The physical ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, pull, push, lift, grasp, and operate kitchen equipment.
- Frequently required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, as well as move about and remain mobile for up to 8 hours per day.
