Position Overview
We are a high-end architectural millwork shop specializing in AWI Premium Grade projects. We are seeking an experienced Cabinet / Millwork Finisher who can produce top-tier, furniture-quality finishes with minimal supervision.
This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for a finisher who already understands production flow, finishing systems, and quality expectations typical of high-end commercial and residential work.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare wood surfaces for finishing (final sanding, defect repair, cleaning, masking)
- Apply stains, dyes, sealers, and topcoats to cabinetry and architectural millwork
- Perform color matching and sample development to meet approved standards
- Execute finishing systems including:
- Conversion varnish
- Lacquer (solvent & waterborne)
- Polyurethane / catalyzed coatings
- Operate and maintain spray equipment (HVLP, air-assisted airless, pressure pots)
- Read and interpret shop drawings, finish schedules, and work orders
- Perform between-coat sanding, polishing, and final rub-outs
- Inspect all work for:
- Color consistency
- Sheen accuracy
- Film build
- Defects (runs, orange peel, contamination)
- Maintain production pace while meeting strict quality standards
- Work closely with production, engineering, and QC teams
Required Experience & Skills
- 3–5+ years experience in cabinet or architectural millwork finishing (more preferred)
- Proven ability to produce high-end, consistent finishes without heavy supervision
- Strong knowledge of:
- Wood species and veneer behavior
- Finish chemistry and systems
- Spray techniques and setup
- Experience with color matching and custom sample work
- Ability to read shop drawings and finish schedules
- Strong attention to detail—ability to catch and correct defects before QC
- Ability to work efficiently in a production environment
What We’re Specifically Looking For
- Finishers who can step in and produce immediately
- Individuals who understand high-end expectations—not production-grade shortcuts
- People who take ownership of their work and don’t rely on constant direction
- Experience in AWI Custom or Premium shops is strongly preferred
Most finishing jobs focus solely on output.
This role is about precision, consistency, and craftsmanship at the highest level, while maintaining output.
AWI Premium work demands finishes that are visually flawless at close inspection distances, with tight control over color, grain continuity, and defects
