The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood specimens and related samples in a safe, accurate, and professional manner to support patient care, diagnosis, and treatment. This role serves patients throughout the hospital by ensuring proper specimen collection, identification, handling, and transport in accordance with hospital and laboratory procedures.
High school diploma or equivalent required
Completion of an approved phlebotomy training program preferred
Current phlebotomy certification
Previous hospital, laboratory, or patient care experience preferred
Knowledge of venipuncture, capillary collection, specimen handling, and infection control procedures
1. Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures according to hospital and laboratory standards.
2. Verifies patient identity using two approved identifiers before specimen collection.
3. Explains procedures to patients and provides courteous, professional service to patients, families, and staff.
4. Labels all specimens accurately and immediately at the bedside or point of collection.
5. Collects, processes, and transports blood and other specimens in accordance with established procedures.
6. Maintains proper specimen integrity by following requirements for timing, storage, and handling.
7. Documents collection attempts, specimen status, and related patient information in the electronic health record and laboratory systems.
8. Responds to requests for routine, STAT, and timed collections as assigned.
9. Communicates difficulties, specimen discrepancies, abnormal conditions, or collection delays to appropriate staff promptly.
10. Maintains a clean, organized, and well-stocked work area and replenishes supplies as needed.
11. Adheres to infection prevention, isolation precautions, hand hygiene, sharps safety, and other safety procedures.
12. Maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPAA, hospital policies, and departmental procedures.
13. Behaves and dresses in a professional and courteous manner consistent with the facility’s Standards of Behavior.
14. Performs other duties as assigned.
