Job Description
A day care center’s lead teacher works with the center’s director(s) to create a program that addresses the specific needs of the children assigned to his or her care. This curriculum should fulfill the children's educational, developmental, cognitive, emotional and social needs. The lead teacher also supervises assistant teachers and volunteers who work in her classroom.
Teaching Responsibilities
The lead teacher develops both long- and short-term lesson plans based on the curriculum and philosophy of the daycare center. While a day care lead teacher doesn’t give children grades, she does assess their developmental growth. He or she maintains a record of that growth and keeps parents up to date -- communicating with parents is a routine part of the teacher's job. The lead teacher is also responsible for setting up her classroom to reflect the lessons she is currently teaching. For example, he or she might create a bulletin board with labeled colors when teaching the class about colors. Routine record keeping, such as attendance, is the lead teacher's responsibility as well. As he or she keeps records, she must keep in mind the information is confidential.
Additional Duties
The lead teacher must be vigilant about the health and safety of her children. If he or she sees something that poses a health hazard, he or she should report it to the appropriate staff member. The same is true if he or she sees a suspicious person on the premises. Day care workers must also report any suspected cases of child abuse to the appropriate authorities. The teacher must keep records of any reported abuse and the response of the investigator. Each day care has its own method for ordering supplies, and the lead teacher is responsible for going through the proper channels to request the materials he or she needs in their classroom. He or she is responsible for continuing their education according to state regulations.
Qualifications
An associate's degree in early childhood education or a diploma with at least 2 years of work experience. Teachers must have a current certificate in first aid and CPR. A valid driver's license is also required.
