GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Operates light equipment as utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of roads, rights-of-way, bridges, and storm drainage systems; and performs related work as assigned. Works under the close supervision of the assigned supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- May operate a bobcat, skid steer, backhoe, UTV/Gator, crew truck, tractor mowers, or other light vehicles in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
- May operate machinery as the department needs require.
- Works with and assists as part of a crew in digging ditches, repairing bridges, laying pipe, spreading asphalt, and/or any other related work as necessary.
- May be responsible for grounds maintenance.
- Occasionally, heavy equipment that does not require a CDL.
- Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
- May be required to work a staggered shift, depending on weather conditions if department needs require it.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this role.
- May be required to work overtime as necessary.
- May be required to work “on-call” duty as assigned by the Director of Public Works or another authorized supervisor.
NONESSENTIAL DUTIES
Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of equipment operating principles.
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to vehicular equipment operations.
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in road and bridge maintenance work.
- Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to observe proper safety precautions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions, including excavation sites.
MAY OPERATE
Motorized vehicles and equipment that require a CDL, plus other light equipment such as pickup trucks, UTVs, crew cabs, saws, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radios, and phones.
EDUCATION
A high school diploma or G.E. D. equivalent is required.
EXPERIENCE
A minimum of 1 year of prior experience involving the use of light to medium-sized equipment, some of which must have been related to construction, repair, and/or maintenance, is preferred.
DRIVER’S LICENSE
A valid Tennessee Class B CDL with a clear driving record is required. Some departments may require specific CDL endorsements. If a candidate does not have a valid Tennessee driver's license, they must acquire one within 30 days of hire.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Due to the on-call nature of this position, the ideal candidate should reside in Wilson County or within a 45-minute drive of Public Works (410 Park Dr, Lebanon, TN 37087).
AGE REQUIREMENT
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside-weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
