Inventory Control SpecialistPosition Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Inventory Control Specialist to maintain accurate inventory records and support warehouse operations within an active steel service center. This position is responsible for inventory accuracy, cycle counts, discrepancy resolution, ERP updates, and physical inventory activities.
The ideal candidate has experience working in a steel service center, metals warehouse, or similar industrial environment and understands steel grades, specifications, dimensions, and material identification. Safety, accuracy, organization, and strong communication are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate counts and records of all inventory items.
- Perform routine cycle counts and investigate inventory discrepancies.
- Research and resolve shortages, receiving errors, and inventory variances.
- Reconcile inventory discrepancies with Operations leadership.
- Enter inventory adjustments and updates into the ERP/inventory management system.
- Maintain detailed logs of inventory discrepancies, adjustments, and resolutions.
- Assist management with annual inventory preparation and physical inventory counts.
- Verify incoming and existing materials against documentation and specifications.
- Identify steel products by grade, size, gauge, length, and material specification.
- Read and interpret mill certificates and material specifications.
- Use measuring equipment to verify material dimensions and tolerances.
- Communicate inventory issues and discrepancies to warehouse and operations teams.
- Follow all company safety procedures when working around overhead cranes, forklifts, processing equipment, and steel materials.
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience in a steel service center, metals warehouse, or industrial warehouse environment.
- Knowledge of carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and structural steel.
- Strong understanding of steel grades, gauges, lengths, dimensions, and common steel terminology.
- Ability to read and interpret mill certificates and material specifications.
- Experience using calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and other measuring tools.
- Ability to verify material dimensions and tolerances.
- Experience using ERP, inventory management, or warehouse management systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Strong documentation, organization, and recordkeeping skills.
- Strong problem-solving and discrepancy-resolution abilities.
- Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced warehouse environment.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs. as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Forklift operating experience.
- Overhead crane operating experience.
- Knowledge of safe rigging practices.
- Experience performing cycle counts and physical inventories.
- Experience making inventory adjustments within an ERP system.
- Previous experience identifying steel by specification and material grade.
Work Environment
This position works inside an active steel service center with overhead cranes, forklifts, steel products, and processing equipment. The employee must remain alert to moving equipment and materials and follow all required safety procedures.
The role requires frequent movement throughout the warehouse and may involve standing, walking, lifting, bending, and handling materials. Clear communication and strict adherence to safety and rigging procedures are essential.

The ideal candidate is a highly organized and detail-oriented inventory professional who understands steel and metals and can accurately track material from receiving through inventory. They should be comfortable investigating discrepancies, working with ERP systems, using measurement tools, and communicating with warehouse and operations leadership.
Experience in a steel service center or metals warehouse is strongly preferred.
Pay: $18.00 - $19.75 per hour
