Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and energetic Nursery Coordinator to lead and manage our early childhood education programs. In this role, you will provide a safe, nurturing, and engaging role for children ages zero to five during Sunday worship and designated church events, and you will collaborate closely with parents, staff, and volunteers to provide developmentally appropriate care and learning for children.This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children and their families.
Responsibilities
Sunday Preparation & Care
- Arrive by 9:30 AM to prepare the nursery space
- Welcome children beginning at 9:50 AM
- Provide attentive, safe, and developmentally appropriate care for children ages 0–5
- Create a warm, engaging environment through simple, age-appropriate, and intentionally planned activities
- Screen use is not permitted for childcare or entertainment.
- Provide snacks and water (purchased in advance and reimbursed)
- Change diapers as needed
- Offer nap time as appropriate
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized nursery space
Safety & Check-In
- Ensure all children are signed in and out by a parent/guardian
- Collect and maintain parent/guardian names and contact information
- Follow all church safety policies and procedures
- Complete required trainings (e.g., mandated reporting, CPR/First Aid)
Volunteer Coordination
- Recruit and maintain a base of nursery volunteers
- Schedule 1–2 volunteers per Sunday to ensure appropriate coverage
- Provide guidance and support to volunteers during their service
- Help foster a positive and supportive environment for volunteers
Communication & Accountability
- Communicate regularly with the Pastor (Head of Staff) regarding needs, concerns, or updates
- Notify the Pastor as soon as possible in the event of illness, delay, or absence
- Coordinate in advance to ensure coverage if unable to serve
Schedule
- Sundays, approximately 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
- Occasional additional hours for church events, as agreed upon
Time Off
- This position does not include paid vacation. Any scheduled time off is unpaid and should be arranged in advance with the Pastor (Head of Staff).
- This position allows 4 Sundays off per year (unpaid), to be scheduled two weeks in advance with the Pastor
- In accordance with California law, an initial 6 hours of sick leave, and will continue to accrue additional sick leave at a rate of 1 hour for every 20 hours worked, up to a maximum of 80 hours.
- Sick leave may be used for qualifying reasons as defined by law. As much notice as possible should be given, and coverage coordinated when feasible.
Compensation & Classification
This position is classified as a non-exempt, hourly role. The Nursery Coordinator will be compensated at an hourly rate of $22.00-$25.00 per hour, in accordance with applicable state and local wage laws. The regular schedule includes Sunday hours and any additional pre-approved time for preparation, volunteer coordination, or special events. Any hours beyond the regular schedule should be communicated and approved in advance by the Pastor (Head of Staff).
Timekeeping
The Nursery Coordinator is required to clock in and out using the Clockify app for all hours worked, including Sunday shifts and any additional approved hours. All time worked must be accurately recorded. If any corrections are needed, they should be communicated to the Pastor (Head of Staff) as soon as possible. Work should not be performed off the clock.
Requirements
- Must successfully complete a background check
- Must complete required trainings (e.g., mandated reporting, CPR/First Aid) within a reasonable timeframe after hire
- Must adhere to the Church Employee Handbook
Experience
- At least 1–2 years of experience caring for young children (ages 0–5), such as in a daycare, preschool, church nursery, or regular babysitting/nanny role
- Experience working with infants and toddlers, including feeding, diapering, and supporting nap routines
- Experience creating or facilitating simple, age-appropriate activities (e.g., play, crafts, storytelling, music)
- Experience maintaining a safe, clean, and organized childcare environment
- Experience communicating with parents or caregivers about children’s needs, behaviors, and well-being
- Experience working alongside or coordinating volunteers, assistants, or team members in a childcare or group setting
- Helpful but not required:
- Experience in a church or faith-based setting
- Experience supporting children from diverse cultural, linguistic, or family backgrounds
- Experience managing check-in/check-out procedures or basic administrative coordination
Supervision and Introductory Period
Reports to the Pastor (Head of Staff). The first 90 calendar days of employment will serve as an introductory period. During this time, the Nursery Coordinator’s performance, reliability, and overall fit for the role will be evaluated. This period also provides an opportunity for the employee to become familiar with the expectations, responsibilities, and culture of New Bridges Presbyterian Church.
Pay: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour
