The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator, under general supervision, performs entry level functions working in the construction and maintenance of highways. This position will work on the Cenforce crew and be assigned to the Building and Grounds section of the Operations Division. Duties include: Driving a light truck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removal and ice control (SRIC). Operating various equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well as various hand tools. May be responsible for transporting materials or fuel to equipment and providing traffic control by flagging on job sites. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performing other related duties as required. Statewide weekly OVERNIGHT travel is required. This position WILL NOT report to the Operations Division Charleston Headquarters. It is a STATEWIDE position and requires EXTENSIVE weekly statewide travel. Performs other related work as required.

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. The selected applicant will be required, within 6 months of employment, to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.

In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
