Position Summary
McKinney Excavating is seeking an experienced Pipe Crew Foreman to lead underground utility installation crews on commercial, industrial, municipal, and site development projects throughout East Tennessee. This position is responsible for supervising field personnel, coordinating daily operations, ensuring quality workmanship, maintaining safety standards, and delivering projects on schedule.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with extensive experience installing storm, sanitary sewer, and water utility systems who can effectively manage crews, equipment, and project requirements in a fast-paced construction environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise pipe crew personnel on active construction sites.
- Operate heavy equipment (excavators, loaders, skid steers, etc.)
- Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, grades, and utility drawings.
- Coordinate daily work activities with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and inspectors.
- Oversee installation of:
- Storm drainage systems
- Sanitary sewer systems
- Water distribution systems
- Utility structures, manholes, catch basins, and related infrastructure
- Ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to specifications.
- Monitor crew productivity and maintain quality control standards.
- Conduct daily safety meetings and enforce company safety policies.
- Verify proper trench safety practices, including shoring, sloping, and excavation procedures.
- Coordinate equipment, materials, and labor needs for each project.
- Maintain project documentation, daily reports, and communication with management.
- Troubleshoot field issues and make sound decisions to keep projects moving.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in underground utility construction.
- Previous experience as a Pipe Foreman, Crew Leader, or similar supervisory role preferred.
- Strong knowledge of storm, sewer, and water utility installation.
- Ability to read and understand construction plans and grade stakes.
- Experience operating heavy equipment and excavation operations.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements and trench safety regulations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Valid driver's license required.
- CDL is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in trenches, around excavation equipment, and in physically demanding environments.
