Position Overview
The Adjunct Instructor for HVAC is responsible for delivering high-quality, trade-relevant
instruction to apprentices enrolled in our Registered Apprenticeship Program serving the DC,
Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region. The instructor will teach related technical instruction (RTI) courses aligned with national HVAC curriculum standards, ensuring apprentices develop the knowledge and skills required to advance in their trade and meet state licensure requirements.
This position includes hands-on training one day per week. This is a part-time, independent contractor position.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver HVAC-related technical instruction courses to apprentice learners in accordance with the approved curriculum and apprenticeship standards.
- Develop, update, and maintain course materials including lesson plans, presentations, assessments, and hands-on labs aligned with NCCER and program standards.
- Assess apprentice progress through practical demonstrations, written evaluations, and skills-based assessments; maintain accurate records of attendance and grades.
- Provide a safe, professional, and inclusive learning environment that reflects real-world trade conditions.
- Collaborate with the Program Director and on-the-job training (OJT) sponsors to ensure alignment between classroom instruction and field experience.
- Remain current with industry codes, standards, and best practices including changes to HVAC regulations in Maryland and Virginia.
- Attend required instructor meetings, orientations, and professional development sessions as scheduled.
- Maintain compliance with all program, accreditor, and state reporting requirements.
- Mentor and motivate apprentices, fostering professionalism and a commitment to the trade.
Mandatory Requirements-Licensure
- Must hold a valid Journeyman HVAC license or higher issued by the State of Maryland and the State of Virginia.
- License must be current and in good standing with no unresolved disciplinary actions, suspensions, or revocations.
- Instructors whose license lapses or falls out of good standing during employment must notify the Program Director immediately; continued instruction cannot occur until the license is reinstated.
- Applicants licensed only in one state (MD or VA) must obtain licensure in the other jurisdiction within a timeframe specified by the Program Director.
Virginia Instructor Training
- Must complete the required 2.5-hour Virginia Apprenticeship Instructor Training prior to delivering instruction to registered apprentices in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- This training is mandated by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) for all instructors teaching within a registered apprenticeship program in Virginia.
- Documentation of completion must be submitted to the Program Director before the first day of instruction.
NCCER Instructor Certification
- Must successfully complete the NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) Instructor Certification training, which consists of approximately 18 hours of instruction.
- NCCER Instructor Certification ensures that instructors are trained to deliver NCCER curriculum with fidelity and in alignment with accreditation standards.
- Certification must be obtained prior to independently leading NCCER-accredited courses; the Program may allow supervised instruction during the certification period at the Program Director's discretion.
- Instructors are responsible for maintaining active NCCER instructor credentials and completing any required renewal or continuing education.
- All courses assigned to the instructor will be mutually agreed upon by both parties prior to the start of each term or instructional period.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master HVAC license in Maryland and/or Virginia.
- Prior experience teaching, or training, or mentoring in a trade, vocational, or apprenticeship setting.
- Familiarity with competency-based education and hands-on instructional methodologies.
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards including ASHRAE, EPA 608, NATE, and local mechanical codes- International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), and National Electrical Code (NEC) / NFPA 7
Pay: $50.00 per hour
