Sporting Goods Sales Associate
Position Summary
The Sporting Goods Sales Associate is responsible for providing exceptional customer service while assisting customers with a variety of sporting goods products, including hunting, fishing, camping, outdoor recreation, firearms, ammunition, optics, and related accessories. This position maintains department presentation, assists with inventory management, processes sales transactions, and ensures customers receive accurate product information and recommendations.
Because this position involves the sale of firearms and ammunition, associates must possess extensive knowledge of firearms and ammunition and maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing firearm sales.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Customer Service & Sales
- Assist customers with the selection and purchase of sporting goods merchandise.
- Provide knowledgeable recommendations on hunting, fishing, camping, outdoor recreation, firearms, ammunition, and related products.
- Answer customer questions regarding product features, specifications, applications, and availability.
- Promote additional merchandise and accessories to enhance customer satisfaction and sales opportunities.
- Deliver a professional, friendly, and customer-focused shopping experience.
Firearms & Ammunition Sales
- Assist customers in selecting firearms, ammunition, optics, safes, and firearm accessories.
- Conduct firearm transactions in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, as well as company policies.
- Complete required firearm sales documentation accurately and thoroughly.
- Verify customer eligibility and identification as required by law.
- Process required background checks and related documentation.
- Promote responsible firearm ownership and safe firearm handling practices.
- Maintain strict adherence to firearm storage, handling, security, and safety procedures.
Merchandising & Inventory
- Receive, inspect, and stock merchandise.
- Ensure products are properly priced, displayed, and organized.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and assist with inventory counts and audits.
- Restock shelves, displays, and merchandise racks as needed.
- Monitor inventory levels and communicate replenishment needs to management.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and attractive department.
Operational Responsibilities
- Operate point-of-sale systems and process transactions accurately.
- Follow company procedures for cash handling and customer transactions.
- Assist with department promotions, special events, and seasonal merchandising.
- Support other store departments when needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a retail environment.
- Knowledge of sporting goods products and outdoor recreational activities.
- Ability to learn and retain detailed product information.
Mandatory Firearms Qualifications
- Must possess a clean criminal record and be legally eligible to possess and transfer firearms under all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Must have working knowledge of firearms, ammunition, calibers, firearm safety, and common firearm platforms.
- Must be capable of understanding and complying with all laws, regulations, and company policies related to firearm and ammunition sales.
- Must successfully complete any company-required firearms compliance training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous retail sales experience.
- Experience in sporting goods, hunting, fishing, shooting sports, camping, military service, law enforcement, or a related field.
- Experience processing firearm transactions and conducting ATF-compliant sales procedures.
- Familiarity with inventory management and point-of-sale systems.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and stock shelves.
- Ability to safely handle sporting goods products, including firearms and ammunition.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.

Working Conditions
This position works in a retail sporting goods environment that includes the sale of firearms, ammunition, and outdoor recreation products. Associates are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism, provide expert product knowledge, and ensure all transactions involving regulated products are conducted safely, accurately, and legally.
Note: Employment is contingent upon the applicant maintaining legal eligibility to possess and transfer firearms and meeting all applicable company and regulatory requirements throughout employment.
Pay: $12.00 - $14.00 per hour
