JOB Under the direction of the Collection Foreman and Street Superintendent, the Collection Laborer performs maintenance and labor duties related to the City’s sanitary sewer and stormwater collection systems. Responsibilities include assisting with inspections, sewer cleaning operations, infrastructure maintenance, equipment operation, emergency response activities, and general support of collection system and street department operations. Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve physically demanding labor and exposure to occupational and public safety hazards. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Inspect, maintain, repair, and operate sanitary sewer and stormwater collection systems.

Perform preventative and corrective maintenance activities on sewer and stormwater infrastructure.

Operate combination sewer jet/vac trucks, CCTV inspection equipment, vacuum trucks, camera trucks, and other specialized collection system equipment.

Conduct CCTV inspections of underground sanitary sewer and stormwater systems to identify leaks, breaks, infiltration, blockages, roots, grease buildup, damaged pipes, utility conflicts, and other deficiencies.

Perform hydro cleaning and sewer cleaning operations.

Inspect manholes, sewer mains, storm mains, lateral connections, and associated infrastructure.

Coordinate and document repairs including pipe repairs, manhole rehabilitation, lid replacement programs, grade adjustments, and H2S-related maintenance.

Operate equipment including loaders, backhoes, forklifts, dump trucks, snowplows, generators, pumps, power tools, and hand tools.

Respond to customer complaints, sanitary sewer backups, stormwater issues, emergency spills, and after-hours emergency calls.

Participate in confined space entry operations in accordance with safety regulations and permit requirements.

Follow all applicable safety procedures, policies, and confined space requirements.

Maintain shop areas, storage facilities, vehicles, equipment, and tools in a clean and orderly condition.

Participate in the City’s on-call/standby rotation and respond to emergency calls within 30 minutes of notification, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Assist with street department operations including winter operations, storm throat repairs, street sweeping support, and infrastructure repairs impacting both street and collection systems.

Assist other utility or public works personnel as needed.

Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements
This position requires heavy physical work, including the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and more than 20 pounds of force on a constant basis. Regular physical activities include climbing, pulling, kneeling, stooping, crawling, crouching, standing, sitting, reaching, hearing, pushing, walking, balancing, lifting, grasping, talking, and performing repetitive motions.
Visual requirements include the ability to work at close distances, operate equipment within arm’s reach, and safely operate mobile machinery. The ability to understand and follow written, verbal, and diagrammatic instructions is essential.
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and involves exposure to weather conditions, temperature extremes, noise, vibration, oils or cutting fluids, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, and areas with poor ventilation. Occasional use of a respirator is required.
